第 4 章 大学グループの設定とグループ構造の分析
第 3 節 論文数シェアによる分析対象範囲と大学グループの設定
前 節を踏 まえて、以 下 の方 針に基 づいて分 析 対 象 範 囲 と大 学 グループを設 定 した。分 析 対 象 範囲およびグルーピングの設定基準には、論文数シェアを用いた。この理由は、論文数は研究活 動の活 発さを測る最も基本 的な指 標であること、日本・英国 それぞれでの相対 的な位置 付けに基 づいたグルーピングを行うには、論文数そのものではなく、論文数シェアを用いるのが適当と考えら れることである。論文シェアについては、以下のような基準で「グループ」を設定した。
第 1 グループ： 論文シェア 5％～
第 2 グループ： 論文シェア 1～5％
第 3 グループ： 論文シェア 0.5～1％
第 4 グループ： 論文シェア 0.05％～0.5％
分析対象外 ： 論文シェア 0.05％以下の大学は、分析結果の安定性を確保するため、
分析対象から除外した *。
このグループ分けの際の注意点は、以下である。
○ 大学グループは期間 A～D それぞれにおいて、独立して設定した。すなわち、期間毎に論文数 シェアを算出し、上記区分により大学をグルーピングした。従って、同一大学でも期間により区 分されるグループが異なる場合があり、大学のグループ間移動が存在する。
○ 上記の例外として、第 1 グループ（シェア 5％～）に区分される大学は、「期間Dの論文数シェア が 5％より大きい大学（日本・英国共に 4 大学存在）」で固定し、期間A～Dを通じて共通とした。
この理由は、第 1 グループに該当する大学数が期間毎に変動すると、後の分析に大きな影響 を与え、経年変化を見ることが困難になるためである †。
上記方針に従ったグループ毎の大学数を以下に示す。

* 一 般 に、規 模 の大 きく異なる機 関 が入り混 じったデータの中で、生 産 性 のようにデータの除 算 が必 要 な指 標を算 出 すると、小 規 模 機 関 の値 が非 常 に大 きくなり、異 常 値となりやすい。意 味 ある分 析 を行うには、こうした異 常 値 を取 り除くため、一 定 基 準 以 上 の規 模を有 する機 関 だけに分 析 対 象 を限 定 する必 要 がある。
† 実 際 に、例 外 を設けず、各 期 間 でシェア 5％より大 きい大 学 を「第 1 グループ」と区 分 した場 合 、その数は日 本・英 国とも 3 大 学 →4 大 学 に変 動 する。これらの大 学 は、両 国 大 学 システムの中 でも非 常 に大 規 模 な大 学 であり、1 大 学 でも数が変 動 すると、
その後の分 析 結 果 に影 響を与 える。
