6.Study Abroad
AIU Students must study abroad at a partner institution for one year and earn credits. By following specific procedures, students may also study at non-partner institutions abroad. For detailed information on study abroad, please refer to the Center for International Affairs webpage (http://www.aiu.ac.jp/international/en/).
6-1. Study Abroad at Partner Institutions
(Article 41of the AIU Institutional Principles & Regulations) (1) Partner Institutions
The network of AIU partner institutions has been expanding all over the world. We are expecting to see further expansion of this network, including agreements with distinguished overseas institutions in order to promote student and academic exchanges.
(2) Credits
Credits earned at a partner institution will be accepted as AIU credits through the approval of the Academic Affairs Executive Committee (AAEC). To ensure that credits earned at partner institutions are accepted at AIU, students are strongly encouraged to collect, to the best of their ability, the information on the curriculum and courses offered at the partner institution from their website. The student s study plan should, from its early stages, be discussed with his/her academic adviser, and be approved before departure for study abroad. If it becomes necessary to correct or change the plan, the student should consult with his/her academic adviser and receive approval during the ADD/DROP period at the partner institution.
(3) Period of Study Abroad
The period of study abroad shall be limited to one year.
(4) Status of Students Studying Abroad
A student will remain enrolled at AIU during study abroad.
(5) Costs for Study Abroad
During study abroad, a student pays tuition at AIU and does not need to pay tuition to the partner institution. However, at certain partner institutions, a student is required to pay, in addition to AIU s tuition, the difference between the tuitions of AIU and the partner institution.
When a student earns credits beyond the maximum number of credits set by the student exchange agreement, or studies in a summer or winter program, he/she will be required to pay all necessary tuition.
In addition to tuition at AIU, students are responsible for all expenses incurred during their study abroad, including room and board, costs for textbooks, transportation, insurance and daily living. For degree-seeking students who are high achieving, Scholarship for Study Abroad is available. Please refer to Chapter V Student Life, article 9 for details.
(6) Study Abroad Seminar (CCS160) for those who were nominated as candidates for study abroad Study Abroad Seminar (CCS160) in Basic Education teaches preparedness for study abroad and offers important information on preparation for study abroad and matters necessary to complete during and after study abroad. Students who have been nominated as successful candidates for study abroad must take this course in the semester prior to departure for study abroad.
Candidate students for study abroad are required to take this course. Therefore, a student will not be allowed to study abroad when she/he has not completed CCS160 (Study Abroad Seminar) in the semester immediately prior to departure.
(7) Designation of Partner Institutions to Study Foreign Language
Language courses taken at overseas partner institutions during study abroad shall be accepted as foreign language courses of AIU and NOT be accepted as GS or GB Study Abroad courses (GSP271-276,371-388,471-488 or ECN371-388). Exceptions will be the cases of students who studied at the following designated partner institutions and earned more credits than what AIU offers by the foreign language courses(including FLN111〜313). These extra credits can be accepted as GS or GB Study Abroad courses. The institutions in the following table do not offer courses in English, but have foreign language courses for international students.
