With a new mission of“ International Liberal Arts,”AIU aims to nurture its students to become globally competent individuals. Our features include, a mandatory one year study abroad, living in a dorm with international students, access to a superb library which is open around the clock, a semester calendar system, Gap Year system, GPA grading system, and option of a September Matriculation. All of these are epoch-making features, and AIU has been leading the effort as a global university from within Akita.
The world in the 21st century has become increasingly globalized in terms of the t r a n s n a t i o n a l m o v e m e n t o f p e o p l e a n d communication. In such a globalized and intercultural society, people must establish their own“ individuality,” enhance dialogue and mutual understanding with others, exert leadership, and take responsibilities for their actions. These are people AIU refer to as ‘gl obal hum an r esour ces,’and st r i ve t o cultivate. I trust that AIU will foster talented individuals who fulfill the demands of an international society and become future leaders in Japan and abroad.
Please use this handbook to guide you at AIU. I hope that each of you will work hard and acquire adequate communication skills so that you will become sophisticated g l o b a l c i t i z e n s w i t h a b r o a d a n d d e e p knowledge by mastering the “ International Liberal Arts” and communication skills in foreign languages.
AIU strives to keep developing and enhancing its quality of education with the aim of becoming“Japan’s World Class Liberal Arts University” with the partnership of the‘ Super Global University’Project.

学生への連絡・通知 Announcements from the University
学生生活に必要な情報提供を行う総合情報管理システム（ATOMS）を2015年4月より運用しています。 学生に対する情報提供は、ATOMSポータルサイトによって行います。また、個人への連絡は電子メールに よって行い、掲示または発信された事項は、通知したものと扱います。見落とすことのないように毎日 ATOMSポータルサイト、電子メールを確認してください。その他の情報伝達手段として、授業の連絡など を行うAIMS(AIU Moodle System)、学外にも公開している大学ホームページが使われています。
学生が情報を見ず、そのために不利益を被ることがあっても、大学では一切の責任を負いません。 AIU operates information management system named AIU Total Management System (ATOMS) to provide important information for students since April 2015.
The university provides information for students via ATOMS portal site. Also, e-mail is used when the university needs to contact individual student.
Once the information is sent, it is considered to have been conveyed to students. It is the responsibility of students to check ATOMS portal site and university e-mail account every day. Other means of communications are AIMS (AIU Moodle System) for course related information, AIU Home Page for the information which can (or shall) be shared broadly. In the case a student is at a disadvantage because he/she did not check the university information via bulletin-boards and/or online accurately, the university will not take any responsibility for his/her loss.

I 大学の概要
I Outline of AIU
1. Akita International University Philosophy
In this age of globalization, where multifaceted exchanges are ever increasing across national borders, we need to mutually accept different worldviews and value systems, work together to solve various issues, and have the strength to pioneer new paths to the future.
With this understanding, Akita International University, through its distinct International Liberal Arts approach, strives to help students acquire superior communication skills in English and other languages and provides them with rich and holistic education. With a strong commitment to nurture students with practical expertise and specialist knowledge born of a global perspective, it is our mission to foster individuals who will contribute significantly to the international and local communities.
2. Features of AIU
As a forward-thinking, individual and internationally-oriented elite university, we use as one of our models the education system which is commonly used in the United States. We are already highly regarded for our unique features listed below and for our success in recruiting excellent students from throughout Japan and around the world.
Course numbering system commonly observed in international higher education.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program (intensive English education program) which begins at matriculation and prepares students for academic success.
English instruction in all subjects.
Small class sizes, taught by instructors from a number of foreign countries. Student exchanges with top-tier colleges and universities around the world. One-year 30-credit study abroad programs, mandatory for all students.
Acceptance of transfer credits from overseas partner institutions (including usage of the method developed by“University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP)”).
Use of the GPA system to guide and acknowledge students, academic achievements. Library, which is open 24 hours a day.
Student residence facilities, which house all first year and international students, and most other students on campus.
Agile and flexible management system, overseen by the university president.
Instructor evaluations, the results of which are reflected in salaries and lead to improvements in education.
Commitment to openness and transparency.
Educational contributions to the community, through a satellite center.

国境を越えて多面的な交流が進むグローバル化の時代には、多様な価値観や世界観を互いに認め合い、諸 問題の解決に努めながら、それぞれが未来を切り拓いていく力が求められます。
こうした認識のもと、国際教養大学は「国際教養（International Liberal Arts）」という新しい教学理念 を掲げ、英語をはじめとする外国語の卓越したコミュニケーション能力と豊かな教養、グローバルな視野を 伴った専門知識を身に付けた実践力のある人材を養成し、国際社会と地域社会に貢献することを使命として います。
2. AIUにおける教育制度の特色
本学は個性と国際性を有する少数精鋭の先進的な大学として、米国の大学教育システムをモデルの一つと して、グローバルな国際水準に依拠し、 教養教育重視の国際コード付の独自のカリキュラム 入学当初における学業遂行のための英語集中プログラム(EAP) 全ての授業の英語による実施 多数の外国人教員による少人数教育 世界の一流大学との双方向交流と、それにともなう留学生の受入れ 全学生への一年間約30単位相当取得の留学義務付け 交流先大学で取得した単位のUMAP方式等による単位互換(Credit Transfer) GPA（評定平均値）制度の導入とその学習指導・顕彰等への活用 24時間開館の大学図書館 全寮制（１年次、留学生を含む。）及び大多数の学生のキャンパス内居住 学長のリーダーシップのもとでの機動的な大学運営 教員評価による教育の改善と年俸制給与等への反映 全ての教育実践の公開 サテライトセンターなどを通じた地域への知の還元 等を通じ、すでに全国及び世界各地から優秀な学生を集め、社会から高い評価を得ています。本学のあり方 をひとつの範として「国際教養」という学部名や学科名を名乗る大学がこのところ急増しつつあることにも 示されるように、本学の挑戦は他大学における改革にも少なからぬ影響を与えているといえます。 ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●3. Areas of Study
At AIU, under the title“ International Liberal Arts” we implement a curriculum that encourages specialized, internationally-oriented learning that crosses multiple disciplines. An incoming AIU class has 175 members; 70 in the Global Business program and 105 in the Global Studies program. To accommodate special non-degree seeking students, a unique feature of AIU, there are an additional 10 openings.

Provides a broad, interdisciplinary education, grounded in business and economics, to prepare students for a lifetime of learning and a capacity to think in creative, critical, independent, and global dimensions.
Objectives of the Global Studies program:
Provides the knowledge, cultural sensitivity and analytical skills necessary for success in today,s increasingly globalized society. Students can study courses related to North America, East Asia and Transnational Studies.
Column: Students,exchange with the local community.
As a public university corporation and a cultural and intellectual focal point of the local community, we provide opportunities for progress and support the development and internationalization of the community with our library which is open to public, open lectures, unique style of education, and experts in many fields.
Not only our instructors, but also our students and exchange students actively plan and participate in community events. AIU students promote international awareness and intercultural understanding by participating in elementary and junior high schools,English classes where they engage in activities with English conversation, games and introductions of their countries.

4-1. A New Structure for University Administration: The Public University Corporation
Akita International University was established as the first public university corporation which, as a cultural and intellectual focal point of the local community, provides useful opportunities for progress and supports the development and internationalization of the community. To that end, it embraces: ① Progressive support of fascinating education and research in an independent environment, ② Private-sector-style management, ③ A resilient, achievement and ability-based personnel system (In contrast to civil-service style management systems) ④ A commitment to transparency, and distribution of resources based on third-party evaluation.
4-2. Organization of the Faculty and Staff
At AIU, with the goal of nurturing students with practical abilities who can contribute to the international world, we seek to employ faculty members from around the world, regardless of age, gender, or nationality, to form the basis of our liberal arts education. As a result, half of our faculty members are foreign, and their presence, along with that of our sizeable exchange student population, creates an international feel to the campus.
In addition to the students and faculty members, we also employ both full-fledged and short-term staff members necessary for the operation of the university. 1. Ideals and Methods of International Liberal Arts Education at AIU
International Liberal Arts Education at AIU is faithful to the traditional ideals and methods of inquiry of the Liberal Arts, but is complementing them with the elements necessary for education of students who want to become leaders in the Global Society.
The chart presenting International Liberal Arts Education at AIU shows its both traditional and innovative elements. It has the form of a twofold division with vertically situated Diverse Liberal Arts Methods of Inquiry, and horizontally situated listing of fundamental Educational Goals. Methodological categories are basically the same as in traditional Liberal Arts, but the goals of education have several innovative items.
The most important among the methods of inquiry is critical thinking. Its main principle is to avoid accepting information or opinion based on external authority. You have to question every statement made by others. You have to search for the assumptions, frequently hidden, which have been made by the person expressing the opinion. You have to be equally critical about your own opinions. Are they really justified by your knowledge and experience? Maybe they are just results of your thinking habits.
One of the dangers brought by globalization is cultural uniformity. Cultural diversity is equally important for the future of humanity as biological diversity for our natural environment. On one hand, securing rights for preservation of the cultural identity of human groups and societies may help to reduce support for terrorism. On the other hand, we can learn from history that the most fruitful periods of development in many regions of the world were products of multicultural interactions. To support cultural diversity it is important to include as one of main goals of education Understanding Own Cultural Identity and Intercultural Competence and Appreciation of Creative Achievements of Diverse Cultures, which completes the list of educational goals for International Liberal Arts.

１．AIUにおける「国際教養」教育の理念と方法
本学における「国際教養」教育は、リベラルアーツを探求する伝統的な理念と方法に基づいていますが、 それは、グローバル化の社会にあってリーダーたらんとする学生の教育に必要な諸要素を織り込んで完成す るものです。 図表に示すようにAIUにおける「国際教養」教育は、伝統的にして革新的な諸要素を含んでいます。それ は二つに区分された形になっていて、縦軸には多様なリベラルアーツの探求方法を、横軸には基本的な教育 目標を配置しています。方法論の分類は、基本的に伝統的なリベラルアーツと同じですが、教育目標は革新 的ないくつかの項目を含んでいます。 探求方法の中で最も重要なのは「批評的思考法」です。その主要な指針は、外部の権威による情報や意見 を無批判のまま受け入れないことです。他人のどのような言辞にも疑問を抱き、人が表明する意見なるもの の奥に潜んでいる仮定を探るべきです。自分自身の意見にさえ、同様に批判的であるべきなのです。真に自 分の知識や経験で証明されているのでしょうか？ただ単に、考え方の癖の結果であるのかもしれません。 グローバリゼーションがもたらす危険性の一つは、文化の均一化です。文化の多様性は、人間の未来にと って自然環境の生物的な多様性と同様に重要なものです。一方で、人間の集団と社会の文化的アイデンティ ティを保存する権利を確かなものにすれば、テロリズムに対する支援を減ずることにつながるでしょう。他 方で、世界の多くの地域においてもっとも豊かな発展をした時代は、多文化的な相互作用の産物であったこ とを歴史から学ぶことができます。文化の多様性を確保するためには、自国の文化アイデンティティを理解 しつつも異文化との交渉力を身に付け、さらに各国の文化がそれぞれに持つ創造性の価値を認めることがで きるようにならなくてはなりません。これらを教育の主目標の一つとして持つことが重要であり、これをも って「国際教養」の教育目標のリストが完成するのです。 Educational Goals （教育目標）International Liberal Arts Education at AIU （AIUにおける国際教養教育）

2. Communication between Students, Faculty and Administration
AIU is a small academic community where it is very easy for students to meet and talk to faculty members. Frequently, students and faculty members know each other very well. Some students stop by in faculty offices to chat with their former or present teachers about academic and non-academic matters. The university encourages students to communicate with faculty and staff members openly and seek advice of any kind whenever needed. But to ensure that all students receive careful advising by faculty members systematically, Academic Advising System has been established at AIU.
Academic Advising System has as its objectives stimulation of students, academic interests, assistance in optimal use of the university resources and support in overcoming academic and personal challenges in the students,lives. For this reason, organization of Academic Advising takes into consideration not only professional expertise of faculty members, but also their hobbies, personal interests, etc. Students may benefit from advice based on experience beyond the professional life of their mentors.
2-1. AIU Academic Advising System Ⅰ. Purposes of Academic Advising
１. To stimulate academic interests of students.
２. To assist in making important academic decisions such as choosing the destination of study abroad, selection of a major, course plan and in getting approval of course matching for classes taken abroad, as well as in optimizing progress toward graduation and future career. ３. To provide consultation and to give advice in students,personal development.
Ⅱ. Responsibilities of Students
１. Attending Orientation for New Students and completing CCS 100: Orientation course (for degree-seeking students) in the first semester after entering AIU.
２. Attending all Study Abroad workshops, workshops or meetings held by major programs or by the university and completing CCS 160: Study Abroad Seminar.
３. Knowing the requirements of their academic programs, selecting courses that meet those requirements in an appropriate time frame, and monitoring their progress toward graduation. ４. Consulting with their academic advisors several times every term.
５. Scheduling and keeping academic advising appointments in a timely manner, so as to avoid seeking advising only during busy registration period.
６. Being prepared for advising sessions (for example, by bringing in a list of questions or concerns, by checking courses offered at the institutions of their study abroad, by having a tentative schedule, and/or being prepared to discuss their interests and goals with their advisors).
７. Students must remember that they alone are responsible for making sure they have completed university requirements for promotion, study abroad and graduation.
Ⅲ. Responsibilities of Advisors
１. Understand the goals and mission of the university.
２. Understand their roles as mentors for advisees, which go beyond simple assistance in paperwork or in following university procedures.

本学は小さなアカデミック・コミュニティですので、学生は容易に教員と知り合い、面談することが できます。多くの学生と教員はよくお互いを知っています。学生達は現在またはかつて講義でお世話に なった教員達のオフィスを訪れ、学業や、学業以外のことについて気軽に話すことができます。大学は、 学生達が教職員と心を開いて話し合い、必要な時はいつでもどんなことでもアドバイスを受けることを 推奨しています。そして、すべての学生が継続して配慮のあるアドバイジングを受けられるように、ア カデミック・アドバイジング・システムが作られています。 アカデミック・アドバイジング・システムは、学生のアカデミックな関心を刺激すること、大学が持 つ資源を最大限に利用して学業や学生生活における様々なハードルを乗り越えていくために支援するこ とを目標としています。このため、アカデミック・アドバイジングは教員の学術的な専門だけでなく、 趣味や個人的な関心なども考慮しつつ実施されています。学生はアドバイザーから、専門の領域を超え た人生経験からのアドバイスを受けることができるでしょう。 2-1. AIUアカデミック・アドバイジング・システム Ⅰ. アカデミック・アドバイジングの目的 １．学生のアカデミックな関心を刺激すること。 ２．留学先、専門課程選択、学修計画、帰国後の単位認定、卒業までの学業進捗確認、卒業後の進 路決定のように学生が学業上重要な決定をする場合の支援をすること。 ３．学生が人間として成長するために相談に応じ、助言を与えること。 Ⅱ. 学生の責任 １．入学した最初の学期に新入生オリエンテーションを受け、また正規学生は「CCS 100 オリエ ンテーション」を履修すること。 ２．留学説明会や大学全体または課程別に開かれる説明会などに参加するとともに、「CCS 160 留 学セミナー」を履修すること。 ３．自分の属する課程の必修科目や、必要な選択科目や単位数を理解するとともに、適切な時期に それらの科目を履修し、卒業にむけての進捗状況を常に認識すること。 ４．毎学期に数回は計画的にアドバイザーと面談すること。 ５．アドバイザーとの面談はアポイントメントをとり、約束の時間を守ること。履修登録期間に なって初めてアドバイザーに連絡を試みるということにならないようにすること。 ６．アドバイザーとの面談時間を有効に使えるように事前準備をすること。（質問や気になること のリストを作っていく、留学先大学で提供されている科目を調べていく、おおまかなスケジュ ール案を作っていく、関心のある事柄や自分にとっての目標を話し合えるように英語で準備し ていく、など。） ７．進級、留学、卒業に必要とされる要件を満たしているかどうかを確認する最終責任は学生にあ ることを常に意識すること。 Ⅲ. アドバイザーの責任 １．大学の使命と目標を理解すること。 ２．規定通りの書類のやりとりではなく、学生のメンターとしての役割を理解すること。 ３．学生の学業上の目標を理解し、その達成に向けて支援すること。 ４．大学の諸規則、カリキュラム、履修登録手続き、海外留学要件と手続きや目標、就職活動の 状況について理解すること。５. １. Only full-time faculty members serve as academic advisors.
２. During EAP/Bridge and the first semester in Basic Education, students will receive advising from EAP faculty members.
３. International (Non degree-seeking students) will receive advising from Japanese Language and Japan Studies Program Faculty members.
４. Each faculty members will have approximately 25 students as advisees. Ⅵ. Procedure
１. The following students need to submit the online form,“Application for Change of Academic Advisor”after reviewing and selecting his or her preference for academic advisor among BE, GB and GS faculty members.
●Students who completed EAP or Bridge Program and the first semester in Basic Education ●Students who wish to change their advisors
(For Reference) Advisor Information URL:http://dbsg.aiu.ac.jp/search?m=home&l=ja/ ２. Based on the applications, the Dean of Academic Affairs will assign one advisor to each
student.
３. The students are strongly encouraged to meet with their new advisors and introduce themselves after the announcement of the result of new advisors.
４. A student who wishes to change the advisor, as a result of the first meeting, can submit the request.
５. Students who wish to change their advisors should explain the reason to both previous and new advisors.
＊The Application term will be held as follows. Spring Semester 2016: May 18〜May 25 Fall Semester 2016: September 28〜October 5
＊Because the number of students who can be assigned to one advisor is limited, not always the faculty member who is student’s choice can be assigned as academic advisor.
2-2. Office Hours
Faculty members post their office hours at their offices and on the Syllabus. During the posted office hours, consulting and advising students have priority over research, preparation of classes, grading and other faculty responsibilities. Students should check the office hours of their advisors and/or make appointments.

3. Academic Integrity
Fundamental to all academic institutions is the notion of academic integrity - a belief in the virtues of honesty, diligence and respect. From this perspective, the pursuit of higher education is an honorable goal undertaken for the purpose of creating and sharing knowledge. Moreover, creating and sharing knowledge, as honorable pursuits, must be undertaken in a fair and just manner. Academic honesty is, thus, essential to a principled pursuit of knowledge. In order for the university to fulfill its educational mission and moral obligations, academic integrity must be upheld by all members of the academy.
3-1. Definition/Examples of Academic Dishonesty
Acts of academic dishonesty undermine the most valued principles of the university, and as such cannot be tolerated. The University regards cheating and plagiarism and other instances of academic malpractice with the utmost seriousness. Please be aware of the need to avoid all suggestion of academic dishonesty – and familiarize yourself with the sanctions that will be imposed if such cases are discovered:
■ Cheating in examinations includes copying from another students, accessing notes or other sources of information, or communication with other students or with any person(s) except the invigilators. These are expressly forbidden.
■Broadly speaking, Plagiarism is defined as presenting someone else’s work as your own. However it can also involve using the work of another without crediting the source, and/or presenting as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud, which comprises both theft and lying about it afterward. Of course, you may use information that you gather from journals, books, the internet, websites, lectures or other teaching sessions, contact with others, etc., but this must always be properly attributed and all external sources used must be referenced. In other words, please note that most cases of plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources: simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed, and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source, is usually enough to prevent plagiarism. Failure to attribute material which is not your own will, however, be regarded as plagiarism, for which the University imposes strict penalties.
■ We recognise that students are sometimes required to work together in seminars or other assessments, and it is often good to discuss assignments with other students. However, unless you are advised specifically for any particular task, all coursework you submit must be your own work, in your own words, and not merely a copy or paraphrase of the work of another student or some other source.
■ All work submitted for assessment must be accompanied by a signature vouching for the academic integrity of the work. Your declaration confirms that the work is your own, and that you are aware it is your responsibility to know the definition and importance of plagiarism.
■Repetition of assessed work: It is not acceptable to use the whole or parts of the same piece of written work for more than one assessment (unless appropriately acknowledged). Substantial overlaps between essays for different courses or between essays and dissertations (without prior authorization) are regarded as cheating and will be subject to the same penalties as plagiarism. 3-2. Policy on Academic Dishonesty
All cases of deliberate academic dishonesty will be reported by the instructor to the Division of Student Records. A student who performs an act of academic dishonesty during any assessed assignment and/or examination will fail the relevant course. In addition, a student who performs such an act of academic dishonesty during the final examination (or assignment given in lieu of the final examination) will fail all courses registered in the relevant academic term. In addition, the student may be strictly penalized according to AIU Regulations as needed. Disciplinary Measures may include being suspended for a semester or more, or dismissal from the university. Refer to the Rules for Student Disciplinary Measures for more specific information.
