７月２７日にルイジアナ選出議員として活躍 されある時は副大統領の候補になられたボッグス 女史が９７歳の長寿を全うされてなくなりました。彼 女は政治家として市民の友であり、女性としてよき 主婦、賢明な母親であり、地に着いた生活の実践 者で私が米国でもっとも敬愛する女性です。私は 可成り前に彼女について次のようなものを書きまし た。この際皆様に読んで頂けたら幸いです。 ボッグス女史は１９３５年チューレン大学 ニューカムカレッジを卒業 されました。 (year)不慮 の死を遂げたやはりチューレン卒業のご主人、 Hale Boggs 国会議員 の後を次いで１９７３年に議 員に立候補し、以来１８年間連続当選。政治家と して素晴らしい活躍をし、国のため人のために貢 献されてきました。１９９１年プリンストン市長であっ たご長女が癌でなくなったのを潮時に引退されま したが、その後１９９７年にクリントン大統領から任 命され２年間ヴァチカン大使として赴任され、数年 前に帰国されました。一時は副大統領候補にも 上ったほどの女傑で、既に一線から引かれたとは 言え、９０歳近い現在も現役のときに劣らぬ忙しさ で、東奔西走の活躍をしておられます。お子様は 先の長女、ワシントン在住の長男 ロビーイストと 時 事解説者として有名な Cokie Roberts の３人です。 以前からボッグス夫人はわたしの憧れでした。 時々キャンパスや路上でお目にかかった 時挨拶すると、いつも優しい笑みを浮かべ丁寧に 返礼なさるお姿がとても優雅で印象的でした。１９ ８５年、当地で第１０会生け花インターショナル北 米大会が開かれました。その会長として私は女史 に開会のスピーチをお願いし、その時初めてお話 をしました。その後、主人が夢のサンシャインプロ ジェクトを発起し、その役員を引き受けいただいた ので、お目にかかることが多くなりました。お願いご とはたいてい引き受けてくださるので、山のような 仕事に加え、私のような市民からの依頼をいった いどのようにこなされるのか不思議でした。ある時、 末娘のコーキーさんにお目にかかったときこのこと を訊ねますと「寝る時間を短縮するのよ。」という答 えでした。いつか女史の家でプゼントを開けながら 電話をされているお姿をちらと見て、なるほどこの 方は幾つものことを同時になされる方なのだと納 得しました。 ある時、拙宅での夕食にご招待しました。 忙しい方だからお出でいただくのは無理かと思っ ていましたら、喜んで伺いますとのお返事でびっく りしたり喜んだりでした。当日の昼過ぎ、大輪の白 欄一鉢が届きました。それはボッグス夫人からでし た。私は感激して へたな俳句を礼状に添えました。 夕食の時、イエール時代、ことに結婚式の時大変 世話になった日本語の先生が、私どもの招待に答 えて９１歳の高齢にも拘らず、「あまり年を取らない うちに伺います。」と近く訊ねて下さると話しました。 女史は「その方にお会いしたい。」とおっしゃいま した。意外なお言葉を半信半疑でもう一度確かめ ますと、「是非うちへいらっしゃい。」といわれるの です。 （続く）

Madam Lindy Boggs (No.1) Katie Arimura
Madam Lindy Boggs passed on July 27 at age 97. The below is some of my memories of her. Lindy Boggs was my personal favorite among all the American women I have known. A true lady whom I deeply respected, admired and loved, Lindy was as a citizen's politician, a wonderful
wife and a wise mother. For all of her 97 years she was incredibly down to earth.
Born on a rural Louisiana plantation in 1916, she attended Tulane Newcomb College, where she met Hale Boggs, graduating in 1935. After the loss of her husband in a plane accident over Alaska in 1972, she ran for his vacated seat the following year, being elected as the first US Congresswoman from Louisiana. After 18 years in Washington fighting for the rights of women and the
disadvantaged, she stepped down in 1991 to care for her eldest daughter, former mayor of Princeton, who was terminally ill with cancer. She came out of retirement in 1997 to launch her diplomatic career as ambassador to the Vatican upon
appointment by President Clinton. Even into her 90's she was still actively involved in philanthropic activities as well as in her role as mother to her lobbyist son and journalist daughter. She once told me proudly that one of her grandchildren had been appointed ambassador to Switzerland.
Lindy Boggs will forever be my ideal lady. Whenever I greeted her, whether on the street or on the Tulane campus, she greeted me back elegantly with her charming smile. One of the earliest memories is from 1985 at the North American Conference of Ikebana International in New Orleans. As chairman I invited Lindy to deliver opening remarks and to attend the ribbon cutting ceremonies. That was the first time I got to know her. Later when my husband Akira worked on the fundraising for the Sunshine Project for Tulane, we asked her to be on the board. Ever since I often met with her and came to know her better. She would never refuse our requests. I wondered how she could manage her many responsibilities this way. I asked Cokie, her younger daughter, when I met her. She answered, "She just shortens her sleeping time." I witnessed how efficient she was managing time when I was invited to her home. She held the phone in her right hand as she opened gifts with her left. I then understood how she could manage several things at a time.
Once I invited her to dinner at my home. I was skeptical that she would accept, being so busy. Surprisingly her answer was, "Yes, with
pleasure". On the day of the dinner, a beautiful orchid plant was delivered to my home. It was from Lindy. I was so surprised and delighted that I wrote a thank you note and enclosed
my haiku. During dinner we talked about our friend who helped us at our wedding at
Yale. "Before I get too old, I will visit you." She was 91 at that time but had told me that she would visit me before she got "too old". Hearing this, Lindy told me that she would like to meet her when she came down. I was rather doubtful about this request and asked Lindy again if she really meant it. Her answer was yes. "Please bring her to my home." (To be continued)

THE STORY OF A VERY UNIQUE
GARAGE SALE
As I was coming down Ormond Blvd, Destrehan, Louisiana, I saw a pretty G sign in the color green and slowed traffic as I looked. It rung a bell in my mind that my grandson, Trez’s friend Akira’s mom, had told me at parents school night (I filled in for daughter Mia and Trez’s dad Bruce), that she was having a garage sale because they were moving to Tennessee. Feeling this could be it, I traveled to the address.
Mrs. Kuniyo Schmidt and her sons, Mani and Akira, were thrilled to see me as well as their helpful neighbor, Mrs. Karis, making me feel so welcome. We had the best visit sharing family pictures with each other. I was given very good deals and an amazing happening was a car seat left behind by Mrs. Miki Rohbock, Mrs. Kuniyo’s friend, after Hurricane Katrina, was for sale and I bought it. It is now a love seat in our family dining room. My granddaughter Justice and I enjoy sitting on it. And you know what, coincidentally, Mrs. Rohbock used to be a Japanese speaking guide for my husband, Satoshi and me and Mrs. Kuniyo was a trainee tour guide on one of our buses for SL TOURS, INC., with our Japanese speaking guide, Mrs. Sanae Keyser (also editor of Japan Club of New Orleans Newsletter), not long ago. What a small world brought together by kindness!!

非常にユニークなガレージセールの話 私はルイジアナ州デストラハンのオー モンドブルバードで、かわいい緑色のG のサ インを見て、運転の速度をゆるめました。私 の孫、トレズの友人アキラのお母さんが、夕 方の学校の行事（私は娘ミアとトレズの父ブ ルースのために参加しました。）で私に言っ たことを 思い出しました。それは彼らがテネ シー州に移動するため、彼女はガレージセー ルをする計画をしていたことです。正にこれ だという感がしたので、私はその住所の方に 向かっていきました。 クニヨ・シュミッ トさんと彼女の息子達、マニとアキラ、そし て彼らの親切な隣人、カリス夫人は、私をと ても歓迎してくれました。私たちは、お互い の家族の写真を見ながら楽しく訪問をするこ とができ、私にいい値段で売ってくれました。 驚くことに、クニヨさんの友人のミキ・ロ ボックさんがハリケーンカトリーナの後、残 していったカーシートを私が買ったのです。 それは今では私の家族のダイニングルームに あり、私の孫娘のジャスティスと私はそれに よく座っています。そして、偶然にも、ロ ボックさんは私の夫のサトシと私のために日 本語観光ガイドしていたことがありました。 そしてクニヨさんはつい最近、SL TOURS, INC.の観光バスに日本語観光ガイドをする早 苗カイザーさん（又、ニューオーリンズ会報 のジャパンクラブの編集者）と一緒に、仕事 を学ぶために搭乗しました。人の親切がもた らした何と小さな世界なんでしょう！ カメリーナ ジョイDiDio ウェイト translated by S.K.
民謡部
菅井 バーカー今年の文化祭はＮＯＭＡの前で工事が 行われていた為、私達民謡部の踊りは、 Sculpture Garden でしなければ為りません でしたが、雷太鼓の伴奏で、大変華々しく 踊ることが出来ました。現在の民謡部は多く のアメリカ人達の参加で編成されていますが、 其の人達の熱心さには頭の下がる思いです。 自分達で、踊りのＤＶＤを造り、新しく入会 した人達に配ってくれました。其の中の一人 は、私の帯の見本を見ながら、自分で、立派 に縫い上げたのには、感動してしまいました。 其の上加藤元彦総領事から支援のお言 葉を頂き、我々責任者(早苗 Keyser＆菅井 Barker）は大いに面目を施しました。 この様な人々に支持されている民謡部 は、これからもいよいよ盛んに踊りをして行 けることと信じます。 最後になりましたが、若林先生が腕輪 の配布そして、ボブ・ターナ氏の民謡部の行 事ために細かな段取りを整えてくださるのに 協力してくださった事を心から感謝したいと 思います。彼らの協力がなければ、この民謡 部の行事はこのように成功しなかったでしょ う。 踊りの練習は主にスライデル図書館で年間 通して行われています。興味がありましたら 連絡は、菅井・バーカー(985) 649-2781、又 は早苗・カイザー (504) 583-1156 までよろ しくお願いします。 早苗 カイザー 編集

Sugai Barker
This year’s Japan Fest at NOMA , due to the construction going on in the front of NOMA, we had to dance in the Sculpture Garden, however, we
danced well getting Kaminari Taiko’s accompaniment.
We also received a warm encouragement from Consul-General Kato Motohiko which was an honor to us the Minyou Dance leaders (Sanae & Sugai). The present Minyou Dance Group
consisted from many energetic American Dancers who are very eager to support our Dance Group. They made 7 Dance DVDs and distributed to the new comers. I was so impressed with their efforts. One of the new dancers made her own Obi using my Obi as a sample.
I am very sure our dance group will
continue to practice supported by these eager dance members.
At last, we would like to especially thank Dr. Masako Wakabayashi for helping to distribute wristbands and Mr. Bob Turner for facilitating our dance events to the details. Without their help our event would not have been so successful.
We have been practicing Japanese
