The materials presented here allow the
reader to visualize the mapped linguistic forms in the living contact of the actual fieldwork. This supplement lists the complete contents of the cards sent to the Centre by the surveyors. The material is listed ･in the order of the numbers of the localities which allows for an instant checking of the main distribution maps.
The following general considerations recom‑
mended the procedure used.
A. Inthemapmakingprocess,acertainunifying
of the phonetic variants became necessary; these variants can now be found here in their original notatlon.
B. The surveyor had noted, besides the form
aimed for in the survey, the whole context of our informants' answer, together with the surveyor'scomments. We give an example of the use of
these materials. Suppose the phrase asked was:
"don't walk while eating". The forms corre‑
sponding to while are found on map 41, but it may be important to ascertain the form of the verb used in this context; it could be ku‑, or kui‑ or tabe‑; this will be found in this supplement.
C. The material can be the object of further analysis or even of map making by the user of the atlas. The raw material presented here shows the kind of transcription used by the surveyors, either the IPA symbols or the katakana syllabary.
However one should not overemphasize the diver‑
gences that could eXist between the different surveyors' transcriptions or even between the various transcriptions used by the same surveyor.
D. The supplement lists first the gramrnatical form used on the maps, which is then followed by the raw materials with the number of the locality.
When IPA symbols have been used, the material is listed in alphabetical order; in case of katakana notation the order of the katakana table has been followed.
