A Soccer Game Friday, September 11
Last week, Ken, one of my classmates who is captain of our school soccer club, told me about a soccer game. This year a lot of school events including sports games were not held. This was the last game for them, 3rd grade students. Ken wanted many people to watch the last game and invited his classmates to come to the game. I have never watched a sports game, so I was really looking forward to the game.
I wanted to do something for the soccer team, and I talked with my classmates about my plan to make something. My friends agreed with me. After we discussed what to make, we were going to make placards. At first we wanted to make each placard for each member, but we didn’t have time to make many cards. We decided to make big one.
On the placard, we wrote a message “Try your best!” and drew a picture of our school mark. If we did so, the players were able to see the placards.
On the day many students from our school came to the stadium and watched the game. Our school team didn’t win the game, but all the teammates played hard. I enjoyed watching a sports game and if I get a chance, I will go to the stadium again. I got back to my home and looked at Ken’s SNS. He took a picture of the placard and uploaded the photo with comments “Thank you, we were really glad”. When I read it, I felt very happy.

次の文章を読んで、後の問 1 ~問 5に答えなさい。
Last year, I went to the city of Miami, the United States of America to see Bob.
He is a college student and he is the child of my (A)mother’s sister. Bob often came to Japan, but this was my first trip to the city. My dream is to work in foreign countries so I asked my parents to go there. At first, they didn’t want me to travel alone. I talked about my dream many times and at last they understood (B)my opinion. I was able to go to Miami for a week.
On the first day, we enjoyed taking about a lot of things like our schools and friends. On the second day, Bob guided me around the city. When we went to a park, I was surprised. On the ground, 〈注 1〉ants were walking but they had something strange.
I said to Bob, “What do the ants have? Are they umbrellas?” He answered “No. They are 〈注 2〉leaves.” “Leaves! Why?” He said “I don’t know.” At that time we have some plans to go to an amusement park and a shopping mall. We had to leave.
At the night of the day, I remembered the ants. I wanted to learn why they had leaves. I told my question to Bob and then, he said “Let’s go to the library tomorrow.”
(C)I was glad to hear that.
Bob and I went to Miami Central Library, it is the biggest library in the city.
I was excited to see the building because it had five floors and it was like a department store. At the entrance we used a computer to know where to go. We took an elevator to the fourth floor. On the floor, there were a lot of books about animals including 〈注 3〉insects.
We found more than one hundred books on ants and we chose 7 books. Each person can borrow up to seven books for two weeks. Bob had the library card but I couldn’t make the card on that day. By the library rules, people from foreign countries had to take a few days to make the card.
We used a large desk and started to read the books Bob borrowed. However, it was too difficult for me. The books were written in English. I only looked at the pictures on the books. When Bob saw me, I probably looked sad. Bob read the books and taught me the information on the books. I was able to know a lot about the ants. I was very surprised to know how interesting they were.
The name is the leafcutter ant. They carry leaves to the nest. They don’t eat leaves. They use leaves to grow a kind of 〈注 4〉mushroom. They plant the mushroom to get enough food. To my surprise, the ants have different 〈注 5〉roles. For example, some ants carry leaves, some look after baby ants and some fight their 〈注 6〉enemies. Leafcutter ants cannot choose their roles. It depends on how big they are. When an ant is born in bigger size, it will have to fight their enemies. When an ant is born in smaller size, it will plant a mushroom in their nest. In their nest the space of the roads are very 〈注 7〉narrow.
【第 3 問題】 the library and looked for the books about the ants. However, there are only a few books about the ants. I asked a 〈注 9〉librarian the reason. She told me some reasons. First the ants don’t live in Japan, so in Japan the books about the ants are not popular very much.
Second there are a lot of books on ants in English. Today researchers around the world write about their studies in English. Many people are learning English and researchers want many people to know about their studies. She said to me, “If you want to read the books on leafcutter ants, you should read the books written in English.” I answered “I’m not good at English very much. It’s difficult for me to read such books.” She said “Then, you’ll start studying harder.” Her words impressed me. (D)On my way home, I had two books. One is an English dictionary and the other is a book about English grammar.

次のダイアログは、日本の高校生シン、インドネシア人女性 Damini、イギリ
ス人男性の Silas が異文化について話したものである。これを読んで、後の問 1 ~問 6
に答えなさい。
Shin: You both have lived in Japan longer than one year, haven’t you? How long have you been in Japan, Damini?
Damini: I have still lived in Japan only for three months yet.
Shin: Oh, sorry, Damini. How about you, Silas?
Silas:
Shin: OK. Did you have any problems after you started living in Japan?
Silas: Just after I came to Japan, I went to a 〈注 1〉lovely soba restaurant with my little girl and my wife. Customers around us made a big 〈注 2〉noise when they eat soba
〈注 3〉noodles. We were very surprised to see it and my little daughter asked us,
“Can I make a noise, too?” (B)But my wife 〈注 4〉strongly said, “No.”
Shin: So did you eat soba noodles without noise?
Silas: No, we didn’t. But we were surprised again when we ate at an Italian restaurant in Japan. Some of other Japanese customers didn’t make any noise when they eat spaghetti. British people even don’t make any noise when we eat any noodles.
Of course, soba noodles, either. But some Japanese people change how to eat noodles when they eat soba noodles and spaghetti. It’s lovely. Japanese people
〈注 5〉respect both 〈注 6〉Western and Japanese culture.
Shin: How about you, Damini?
Damini: I’m from Indonesia and I’m a 〈注 7〉Muslim. Our way of life is much different. You think we don’t have 〈注 8〉pork and 〈注 9〉alcohol. That is true. It’s called halal. And ladies always wear a 〈注 10〉scarf which is called 〈注 11〉hijab. We have to cover our body not to show it to men. That is also true. (C)But we sometimes change those rules when we are in Japan. Some Muslims keep every rule even in Japan, but others keep a part of it because it’s easy to live in Japanese culture. For example, when we work at a store or in an office, we take off hijab because it’s a bad
〈注 12〉manner in Japan.
Shin: So you’re 〈注 13〉going with the life in Japan, aren’t you?
Damini: That’s right. But I had a 〈注 14〉happening like this. I had a party with some girls.
They were Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and American. Other members knew about halal, so we didn’t have pork and alcohol. And all the members were girls so I didn’t put on my hijab. During the party, one of the Japanese girls said, “Let’s take a picture.” I said, “OK, let’s.” So we took a picture. But then the girl asked us, “Can I use this picture on the SNS?” Other girls said, “OK,” (D)but I asked her not to use it on the SNS.
Shin: You don’t like SNS, do you?
Damini: Yes, I do. I often send messages to my family and friends in Indonesia.
【第 4 問題】

Shin: There are a lot of countries and cultures. And there are a lot of ways of thinking.
Damini: Are you interested in any foreign culture now?
Shin: .
