Imagine you are deaf . You can t hear any sound. You can t enjoy music. It is like you live in a world without sound. When someone speaks to you , you can t hear his voice. You may think you can t talk with other people. You may think you cant learn a foreign language. If you think so, do you believe there is a deaf person who teaches English at school?
When Misato Fujiwara entered
Nagoya Gakuin University in April 2007, she was the only deaf student at the university. But she wanted to study in the same way as other students. So a note-taker system was used. In this system, other students helped her in class by taking notes for her.
When she was a second-year student, she met an English teacher with hearing loss.
After she learned about his job experience, she decided to become an English teacher.
She wanted to tell deaf students that it was fun to learn English. She worked on her pronunciation and practiced very hard. She repeated English words many times until she mastered the correct sounds. In 2009, she took part in an English speech contest held at the university. She gave a speech in fluent English and came in second.
She could graduate in four years, but studied at the university for one more year to get a teaching license. After she graduated in March 2012, she started teaching English at Aichi Prefectural Nagoya School for the Aurally Disabled. She said of her students : They can t hear, but if they have a strong will to communicate, they will be understood in English.
