18世 紀 の英 国 は,く り返 し制 定 され た航 海 法 によ る貿易 量 の飛 躍 的 な増 大 と,本 格 的 な海 外 進 出 を背 景 に した貿 易 構造 の転 換(再 輸 出を前提 とする輸出主導 型 の貿易構造)を もた ら した 「商 業 革 命」 を経 験 し,経 済 的 に は繁 栄 の時 代 で

あ った。 そ して,こ の物 質 的繁 栄 と都市 の成長 によ り,購 買 力 の 旺盛 な都 市 型 中流 階級 が成 長 し,住 宅,家 具 ・調 度 品,着 る もの,余 暇 の過 ご し方 な ど,彼
らの要求 を満 たす べ く 「洗 練 され た商 品」 が求 め られ た。 いわ ゆ る文 化 の商 品

化 が も た ら さ れ た 時 で も あ っ た。 同 時 に,ロ イ ヤ ル ・シ ア タ や コ ヴ ェ ン ト ・ ガ ー デ ン劇 場 で の シ ェ ー ク ス ピ ア劇 の上 演 そ して 大 盛 況,コ ー ヒー ・ハ ウ スへ の情 報 提 供 を 意 図 した情 報 誌(新 聞)の 発 達 な ど,文 化 が 首都 ロ ン ドンか ら地 方 へ と波 及 し,ロ ン ド ンを 中 心 とす る コ ミュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ンの ネ ッ トワ ー ク化 が 進

こ の よ うな 文 化 の 全 国 的 普 及 ・発 達 の お か げ で,18世 紀 半 ば の 英 国 国 民 の 読

み 書 き は,男 子 で6割,女 子 は3割 ま で 向 上 した と 考 え ら れ て お り,身 近 な 読 書 は,娯 楽 と して,あ るい は教 養 を 高 め る た め の 手 軽 な手 段 と して,ま す ま す 一 般 大 衆 に受 け入 れ られ る よ う に な った。恐 ら く多 くの 読 者 を 対 象 に,種 々 の, そ して大 量 の 書 物 が 発 行 さ れ,英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル もそ の 例 外 で は な か っ た

もの と思 わ れ る。
最 初 の 英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル,TheEnimieofIdlenesseが,1568年,フ ル ウ ッ ド(WilliamFulwo。d)の 手 に よ って 世 に 出 さ れ て 以 来,16世 紀,17世 紀 と 約150年 も の 問,種 々 の 英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル が 出版 さ れ た。 当 時,マ ニ ュ ア ル の 教 本(教 科書)と して の存 在 意 義,あ る い は 学 問 上 の 貢 献 は を分 認 め られ た 。 しか しな が ら,比 較 的 文 化 水 準 の 高 い18世 紀 の 英 国 に お い て,英 文 レ ター マ ニ ュ ア ル は,英 国 国 民 の 知 的 好 奇 心 を 満 た す 書 物 と して,こ れ ま で の よ うに 一 般 に 受 け入 れ られ た の で あ ろ うか。
一 方,不 幸 と い うべ き か,あ る い は(出 版 す る側 か ら見 ると)幸 い と い うべ き か,未 だ 商 人 の書 く能 力 は十 分 と は い え な か っ た 。 実 際 の 取 引(ビ ジネス)の 場 で,即 座 に,し か も状 況 に 応 じた,正 確 な レ タ ー を 書 け る 商 人 は 果 た して ど の く ら い い た の で あ ろ うか 。当 時 の 商 人 た ち は,若 く して 親 方 の 元 に 弟 子 入 り し, い わ ゆ る徒 弟 奉 公 した 後,独 立 す る の が 普 通 で あ った 。 本 来 な らば そ の 奉 公 期 間 中 に,彼 ら は,技 術 修 得 の た め の 基 本 的 教 育 を 受 け る は ず で あ っ た が,現 実 に は,日 常 の業 務 に 追 わ れ る ば か りで,レ タ ー の 書 き方 を 正 式 に 学 ぶ 時 間 的 な

余 裕 は あ ま り な か っ た よ うで あ る。 そ の た め,彼 らは,臨 機 応 変 に,し か も簡 単 に レ タ ー が 書 け る よ うな,種 々 の 状 況 に応 じた レ ター 例 文(集)を 求 め て い た。 こ の よ う な観 点 か らす る と,英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル に対 す る需 要 は ま だ 十 分 あ る は ず と 予想 さ れ る。
本 稿 で は,こ の よ うな 状 況 下 で 出 版 さ れ た18世 紀 の 英 文 レ タ ー マ ニ ュ ア ル は,ど の よ う な特 徴 を 持 って い る の か,以 下 代 表 的 な マ ニ ュ ア ル を,著 者 の 出 版 の 意 図,レ タ ー の 書 き方 に っ い て の 指 示 な らび に レ タ ー例 文 な ど を 検 討 し,
そ の 内 容 を 明 らか に した い 。
