Tooth extraction is one of the most widely performed procedures in dentistry today and it has been histori-cally well documented that this procedure may induce significant dimensional changes of the alveolar ridge. Past studies have concluded that human reentry studies showed horizontal bone loss of 29% to 63% and vertical bone loss of 11% to 22% after 6 months following tooth extraction. In the past decades, a lot of the biomaterials were developed to preserve the bone volume after tooth extraction.

Type I collagen which is the main component of extracellular matrix of bone tissue that can serve as an ex-cellent delivery system for growth factor and assist the angiogenesis. Calcium phosphate ceramics have been investigated extensively because their mineral chemistry resembles that of human bone. Therefore, the collagen bone graft matrix used in this study is a mixture consisting of bioresorbable purified fibrillar collagen and hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate(HAp/β-TCP)ceramic.

In this study, a novel HA/β-TCP-collagen composite, collagen, bovine xenograft collagen were investigated under anethesia. Quantative analysis of the extraction ridge and histological analysis were done. The results showed HA/β-TCP-collagen composite performed as a newly biomimetic composite biomaterial that com-bines osteoconductivity with osteoinductivity in the socket bone preservation after tooth extraction.
