Hi! I have a friend in Hawaii. Her name is Jessica Yamamoto. We sometimes
talk on the Internet. She likes dancing the hula. It’s a traditional Hawaiian
dance. In fact, it’s more popular than any other dance in Hawaii. I want to
visit Jessica some day and learn how to dance the hula.

今日の重要表現動詞の目的語にくる動名詞
She likes dancing the hula.「彼女はフラダンスを踊るのが好きだ」
like の目的語の位置に来ている dancing は、動名詞で、「踊ること」という意味です。動 名詞とは、動詞の原形に -ing がついたもので、「−すること」という意味で使われます。動名 詞はその名の通り、動詞と名詞の２つの性質をあわせもっており、名詞と同じく、文の主語、 補語、動詞や前置詞の目的語の位置に置かれます。今回は動詞の目的語の位置に来ている例に 焦点を当てています。

That s why の that は、前の文の内容「ジェシカの先祖が沖縄から来ていること」を受 けています。そして why の前に reason が省略されています。補って言うと、That s the reason why she has a Japanese family name となります。つまり、ジェシカの先祖が 沖縄から来ているという事実、それが、彼女の苗字が日本の苗字である理由なのです、という 意味になります。通例 reason は、省略され、That s why--- という形で使われます。

It s one of the most famous dances in the world. 「それは、世界で最も有名なダンス の１つです。」
形容詞の最上級をつくるには、①形容詞に、− est をつける、② most をつける、の２通り の方法があります。これで「もっともーな」という意味になります。通例、形容詞の最上級に は the をつけます。比較的長めの形容詞（３音節以上）の場合は通例、most をつけて最上級 を作ります。最上級は、Lesson 1-2 で学習した , 比較級 + than any other 単数名詞の形で 書き換えることができます。
1. Tokyo Sky Tree is the tallest tower in Japan.
= Tokyo Sky Tree is taller than any other tower in Japan. 2. Ken is the most popular teacher in this school.
