だが,これはあまり適切な用語ではないように思われる.第一に,相互作用という概念 がそれ自体混乱している.第二に,○○属性という名称で統一することによる統一性には 見かけだけのものであり,実質がない.
相互作用には異なる二つのレベルがあり,これらの混同は,しばしば大きな概念上の混 乱の元凶となっている.今,知覚体a,被知覚体x,被知覚体 yがあり,x, yが相互作用し 関係 R(x, y)が成立しているとする.相互作用という用語を使った場合,これが Rのこ とをさすのか,メタ関係R0(a, R) のことをさすのか曖昧である.多くの研究はこのこと に無自覚で,本質的な混乱がしばしば認められる.
更に重要なのは,一次属性,二次属性,. . .,n次属性のような次元とは関係がない,と いう点である.意味役割と意味型の区別は,関係の参与体の数に応じて単調に増え続ける わけではなく,状況依存して定義されるか(意味役割の場合),状況依存しないで定義され るか(意味型の場合)の二値的な区別しかない.状況の複雑性の度合い (参与項の数)は,
意味役割と意味型の区別には反映されない.これに対し,属性はそのような項数の別を反 映して然るべきである.このような理由から,意味役割の概念を,属性の一種と見なし,
事実を「統一的」に扱うことには,あまり実質がないように私たちには思われる.それは,
分類のための分類でしかなく,意味型と意味役割のあいだの質的な違いを無視する効果に 繋がる.
以上のような理由から,意味役割に関しては,それが属性であるという点にこだわらな い方がよいように思う.実際,属性という用語に固執することは,意味役割の基盤が状況 であるという性質の重要性を見失わせる可能性が高い.
