resident’s Message – Japan Club of New Orleans
Happy New Year to all. This coming year will be a challenging one for Japan Club of New Orleans. Dr. Nakamoto mentioned at Bon Nen Kai that our membership numbers are declining and we need to consider making an amendment to Japan Club’s membership requirements. In the coming months the Board and I will be proposing an amendment to adjust our membership requirements to include a wider range of potential new members. We will need each member’s participation in voting on the upcoming change so we can continue the mission of Japan Club of New Orleans.This year Japan Fest will be held on Saturday, October 11th at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). This will be our 20th year of being hosted by NOMA. Also, this year the delegation from Matsue, New Orleans’ sister city, will be visiting. I will be working with our Honorary Consul General of Japan in New Orleans, Dr. Donna D. Fraiche, to see if we can time their visit to coincide with Japan Fest. More to come in the future. If you have any ideas on how we can make Japan Fest better, please e-mail or any of the other officers or board members.

ニューオーリンズ日本クラブ会長からのメッセージ あけましておめでとうございます。今年はニューオーリンズ日本クラブにとって厳し いものになることでしょう。中本先生が忘年会でおっしゃられたように、私達の会員数が減 少している傾向にあるので、日本クラブの会員要件の改正を検討する必要があります。私は 数ヶ月内に役員会議で、メンバーが広い範囲を含み新会員として入会できるよう私たちの会 員要件を調整するための提案をしようと検討しています。ニューオーリンズの日本クラブと しての任務を継続していくためには、この会員要件を変える案に各メンバーの投票が必要と なりますので皆様のご協力よろしくお願いします。 今年のジャパンフェストはニューオーリンズ美術館で（ＮＯＭＡ）10 月 11 日（土曜 日） に催されます。今年でＮＯＭＡによってホストされてから20 年目になります。また、 今年は松江、ニューオーリンズの姉妹都市からの代表団が訪れる予定です。私はジャパンフ ェストと彼らの訪問期間が一致できるようダナ フレッシュ ・ ニューオーリンズ日本名誉総 領事と話し合いを行うつもりです。決まり次第、報告いたします。ジャパンフェストをより 良い行事にする方法やアイデアなどがありましたら、メールで私達役員に連絡を下さるよう よろしくお願いします。 グレッグ 徳山 ニューオーリンズ日本クラブ会長 translated by S.K.

ボッグス女史 ( No.2) 有村勝子 ボッグス女史の家はフレンチコーターのド 真ん中、ストリップショウで有名なバーボンストリー トにあります。入り口でベルを押すと、鍵が開く仕 組みになっていて、昔馬車の通ったトンネルのよう な道を奥へ進むと噴水のある明るいパチオに出ま す。ここは外の騒音からは想像もできない静かさで、 まさに別天地の感があります。女史は笑顔で私た ちを迎 え、大きな窓ガラスのある二階の 部屋へ案 内してくれました。ソファーに座ると 緑が眼に優し い中庭（パチオ）が見えます。ふと見るとお茶の用 意をされたテーブルに、いつか私に下さったと同 じ白欄の鉢が飾られていました。私は 美しい欄を 鑑賞しようと 鉢の近くへ行きました。と、その脇に 私がお花の礼状といっしょに差し出した俳句が そっとおかれているではありませんか。みると女史 は黙って静か来客にお茶を入れていらっしゃいま した。私は彼女の細やかな心遣いに痛く感激し、 茶の心は日本人だけのものではないと思いました。 聞けば８０歳半ばの今も、お手伝いさんは週に２日 だけ、それに庭の世話をするバトラーがいるだけ で、この日はお手伝いさんもなく、一人でお茶の 準備なさったのでした。 この日ばかりでなくボッグス女史は、日常の 家事一切をご自分でこなされているようです。また 可成り大きなパーテーなどもご自分のお仕事でし た。雑談の時、お嬢様（次女）の結婚式の時は１５ ００人を招かれ全てご自分の手料理でご接待なさ れたとのことで、冷蔵庫や台所はオーブンに入れ る時間とか、何時に盛りつけをはじめるなど注意書 きの紙が張られたお鍋や器具で 一杯だったと話 しておられました。 ある夜、９時頃拙宅の電話が鳴りまし た。受話器をとると、「もしもしリンディー です。」というのです。一瞬私は耳を疑いま した。まさかボッグル女史が私に電話を下さ るはずはありません。それがしかし女史から と知ってびっくりしました。それは私が差し 上げた花のお礼で、ピンクカーネーションは 彼女の最も好きな花であること、そして他の 方からいただいた花は萎れるのに、なぜか私 の花は次から次へと咲いて今も元気にしてい る。何か秘訣が有るのではないか。」との質 問でした。わたしは花屋から持ち帰った花を 水切りしたこと、バラは一本づつ茎を焼いて 冷たい水に暫くつけて水揚げしたことなどを 話しました。夫人は「有り難う。一つ勉しま した。」といって受話器をきりました。 （続く）

Lindy lived, of all places, on Bourbon
St. When I rang the door bell, her
charming voice greeted us from the speaker
as the gate was unlocked. After passing
through a dark tunnel, we came out into a
beautifully lit patio, away from the din of
the streets. She welcomed us with her big
smile and took us to a bright room with a
big glass window on the second floor. From
there we could view the whole patio with its
fountain. I noticed she had already
prepared for afternoon tea. There was a
beautiful flower on the table. As I
approached it, I noticed Lindy had placed
next to the flower the letter I had sent her,
along with my haiku. I was so moved by
her thoughtfulness. I realized that the mind
of tea ceremony exists not only in Japan.
She quietly prepared tea, telling me that she
did not have any help that day and that she
had prepared everything by herself for us.
She did her housework by herself, even
managing big parties on her own. She told
me about the wedding reception for Cokie
where she invited 1500 guests to her
reception at home. She took care of
everything. She told us with a laugh that
many pots and pans and boxes of food had
stickers with instructions to "put this into
open at xx time" or "order xx on this day".
She was quite resourceful, even using an ice
box borrowed from a neighbor.
A few days later at around nine in the
evening my phone rang. When I picked up,
the voice on the other end said, "Hello,
Katie. This is Lindy." I was stunned. It
took me a few moments to After a few
minutes it was Lindy. She had called to
thank me for my bouquet of carnations and
roses, which were her favorite. She wanted
to know why the flowers I gave her
bloomed one after another while those she
would receive from others wilted so
quickly. I explained that I had conditioned
them before wrapping. As for the roses, I
explained how I had burned the stems until
they charred then dipped them for a while in
cold water for a while. After that I cut the
stems under water before wrapping. She
said "Thank you Katie. I learned
something" then hung up.

It was an honor to have Deputy Consul, Mr. Kazuhiro Iryu, from Tennessee Consulate General's office and assist him with Grandson Trez, who also enjoyed Santa and his gift with Hana Keyser helping so nice.
