English Paraphrases of Japanese Proverbs Fuminori KURASHIMA

Proverbsaregoodmaterialsforparaphrasing.Andtheyareeasiertounderstandwhen paraphrased.SoIhaveparaphrased‑moreofthem asathirdcontinuationofmycolumnin MemmoiysofNaganoNationalCollegeofTechnologyNo.32,pp.71‑76.Toexplaineachproverb thoroughly,Ihaveformedasystem whichhasthreephasessuchasthelasttime.Theyareas follows.

本稿は,平成2年 (1990年)10月7日,南 山大学 開催の日本時事英語学会第32回年次大会において発 表 した ｢日本語の諺の英語へのパラフレーズ試案｣

に対す る続 きものである.

従 って,長野工業高等専門学校紀要第24号pp.83

‑92に掲載 した ものの続筒本紀要第28号pp.81‑90･

32号pp.71‑76に続 くものである.

この試みのまとめ る動機や狙い,および心掛けた 点 も本紀要第24号pp.83‑92･28号pp.81‑90･第32

号pp.7ト76と全 く変わ るところはない.その記述 も三段階,つま り,(1)由来または直訳,(2)意味また は精神,(3)各諺が,何を戒め,何を教 えてい るか, の方式を取 っている.

70.船頭多 くして船山に登る

指示す る人が多す ぎると物事がまとまらなかった り,物事が うま くいかなかった りす る愉 えである.

71. 袖振 り合 うの も他生の縁

｢他生 の緑｣ とは仏教語 で,｢前世 または来世 の 因縁 とい う意味か ら,人 と人の関係は偶然 によるも のではない.従 って,ち ょっとしたことで知 り合 う ことを示 してい る. また, この諺 は,｢袖す り合 う も他生の縁｣ とも言まっれる.

この諺 に近 い英 語 の諺 に,"Even a chance acquaintanceisdecreedbydestiny."がある.

72.損 して得取れ

目先の小 さな損を嫌がっては大 きな利益 は得 られ ないことか ら,損をした時の慰めの言葉であ る. 普 た,初 めは損をしても,お客の信用を得 ると,次第 に大 きな利益を得 ることになる.

73.宝の持 ち腐れ

貴重 な宝を持 っていなが ら腐 らせてしま うことか ら,役 に立つ ものや優れた能力を持ちなが ら,それ を活用できずにいることの喰 えである.

(1)Inspiteofhavingapreciousjewel,aperson failstopolishittobeautyanditisugly(‑ofno value).

74.立つ鳥後 を濁 さず

水鳥が飛 び立 った後は,水が濁 らないことに由来 し,去 り際は人間的にも,人格的にも, きちんとす る教訓を示 している.

この諺に相当する英語の諺に,"Nevercastdirt intothatfountainofwhichthouhastsometime drunk,"や "Itisanillbirdthatfoulsitsownnest."

がある.

75.立て板 に水

立て掛けた坂 に水を流す と勢いよく流れ ることか ら,弁舌がす らす らと上手であることの癒 えであ り, 話 し上手な人 に当てはまる.

(1) Thisproverbcomesfrom thefactthatwhen we letwaterflow down the board resting againstsomething,thewaterflowsheavily(‑ energetically).

(2) Thisproverbisametaphorinwhichaman'S 飢lenteloquenceisexecellent.

(3) Thisproverbistrueofagoodtalker. この諺に相当す る英語の諺 に,"To speak (or talk)ninewordsatonceJ'% "Yourtongueruns nineteentothedozen."がある.

76.棚か ら牡丹餅

棚か ら突然牡丹餅が落ち,下に寝 ていた人 の口に 入 ることか ら,思いがけない幸運のめ ぐり合いの癒

えである.

77.旅の恥 は掻 き捨て

旅先の見知 らぬ土地では,知人や隣人の目を気に することはないことか ら, 日本人が周囲の目を気に して言 う恥を示 している.

(1) Thisproverbcomesfromthefactthataman doesn'tcareabouthisacquaintances'andneigh‑

bors'attentiontohisbehavioratastrange placewhiletraveling.

この諺 と同 じ よ うな気 持 の英 語 の諺 に,"h sportsandjourneymenareknown."早 "Once overtheborders,onemaydoanything."がある.

78.提灯に釣鐘

提灯 と釣鐘は形が似ているが,提灯 は軽 いし,釣 鐘は重 くて, とても釣 り合い取れないことか ら,二 つの物 に極端 な違 いがある時 とか縁談にもよく利用 される.

79.出る杭 は打たれる

出ている杭 は頭をたたかれて,引きこまらせ るこ とか ら,出 しゃばった行動 は他人 に憎 まれて しま う ことを戒めている.

(1)Thisproverbcomesfrom thefactthatthe stakewhichisjutting(‑sticking)outitstop(‑ head)ishammeredandisdrivenintothesoil. (2)① Thisproverbmeansthatonepersonwho

この諺 と同 じ気持の英語の諺に,"Envy is the companionofhonor."や "Thehighestbranchis notthesafestroost."がある.

80.遠 くて近 さは男女の伸

男 と女 は赤の他人で結 びつき,男女の仲が遠 く離 れているかのように見 えているのに,意外 に近 い こ とか ら,今 まで他人同志が今 日はもう夫婦 とい う関 係を示す.

(1) Man andwomanareperfect(‑complete) strangers,buttheywillbeboundforlife.
