In 1933 1 published in Japan a small article entitled “On the offshore bottom-fishes・

of Prov. Tosa, Shikoku, Japan”. in which two new genera and nine new species were

mentioned. But all the copies of the article were destroyed by a war fire before

they were sent to fish scholars of the word. Consequently l think that those who・

have only seen ・the report of my article in the Zoological Record may be put toヽ

inconvenience for lack of their original descriptions. This consideration has made・

me reproduce the article with revision and supplement.

The collections here noticed・embrace 569species including forms. Among these

160 are those found chiefly near the shore, which really belong to shore fish (S) ,

and g those which live commonly on or near the sea surface (P). Again 6 are those

caught by various kinds of nets only near the sea surface, though they seem to live

common!y near the offshore bottom (N), and 37 those always caught with various

kinds of hooks. and never by “kisen・teguri” although deep sea in habit (H). -・

In the present paper BathAisowrot〉sgiがJSCChlorophthalmidae, Iniomi), Verreopacificus

 (Labridae, Pharyngognathi), Draconettapseudoxenica(Draconettidae, Jugulares) and

Physiculus f必arbatus (Gadidae, Anacanthini) are described as new species.

Mimase and Urado, place・names which appear in this article. were included in

K6chi City after the first edition was published. But for the sake of convenience l

keep the old use of the names in the present edition. ・Consequently Kochi in the

present edition means the old K6chi City and Kochi Market is used for the prese臨

Measurements and counts are made in the same way as ‘in the 01d edition.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude t6 Dr. Shigeho Tanaka, ex-professor of

the T6ky6 University, for his kind advice during a long period 6f time.

This study was carried out partly with the aid of grant from“The Nihon.

Preface to the first edition      △

In the present paper l embody the results of my studies・during the years 1927―

1938 0n the fish living at depths of from about 40 hirol5 to about 250 hiro off Tosa,

one of four provinces making Shikoku which is 叩e of the principal islands of Japan.

      f

The material is chiefly based ‘on specimens Caught by fishing boats commonly

known as "kisen・teguri'2) or “kikai-teguri2) in Japan, which is being operated by

motors much weaker than in ottertrawlers every year from the beginning of October

to the end of April; the rest being catches by several .other contrivances in smaller

scales which are being worked all year round.     I`

The number of specimens. chiefly collected at Mimase Market, near K6chi City,

amounts to upward of three thousand. refeはble to 127 families, 288 genera and 434

species. of which two genera and nine species liste;! below seem to be new to science.
