FOREWORD

Special Section on Information Theory and Its Applications

The special section on Information Theory and Its Applications of the IEICE Transaction on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences is devoted to new theoretical developments and techniques in information theory and its applications to real-world problems. This special section has been annually published since 1991. We received 16 submissions: 13 papers and 3 letters. Some of the submitted papers were originally presented at the 42nd Symposium on Information Theory and its Applications (SITA2019) held at Kirishima, Kagoshima, Japan during November 26–29, 2019. After a careful review process, the Editorial Committee selected 7 papers and 1 letter. We categorized them into the five topics: i) Shannon Theory, ii) Coding Theory, iii) Communication Theory, iv) Cryptography and Information Security, and v) Machine Learning. As the Guest Editor-in-Chief, I would like to thank all authors for submitting their contributions and the reviewers for their insightful reviews to keep the quality of the transaction high. We are especially grateful to Dr. Takayuki Nozaki and Dr. Kenji Yasunaga, the Guest Editors, for their vigorous support, and to the Guest Associate Editors for their collaboration and support.
