in Hearing Impairment in Japan through
International Exchanges

Abstract: We clarified the problems of training social workers specialized in hearing impairment through international exchanges of the deaf social workers and deaf trainers, aiming at establishment of the system of social work specialized in hearing impairment in Japan. It is obvious that we need social work specialized in hearing impairment and there are many social workers who want to be involved in it. First of all, we should recognize sign language as minorities’ language. We should also be aware of the necessity of social workers who are deaf signers. In order to train social workers who are deaf signers, the following are urgent; (1) access services in training institutes of social workers and universities/colleges of social welfare, (2) preparing good environment of practice settings, (3) supporting the students who prepare for national certificate of social workers (eg: teaching deaf students in sign language).
