Q Please tell me about the Faculty of Global Liberal Studies (GLS) Special Admissions Examination [AO Admissions] .
A In the GLS, in order to foster students’ ability to promote mutual understanding with people of different cultures and to be able to cope with the advancement of globalization, we deliver Global Liberal Studies education that focuses on pluralistic values transcending national and regional boundaries. At the GLS Special Admissions examination [AO Admissions Examination], through a self-promotion opportunity, essay writing, and a presentation, we evaluate if the applicant possesses a high level of communicative ability (both in Japanese and English). GLS also offers the general entrance examination based only on academic abilities. If you are applying for this Special Admissions examination, we expect that you will have lodged your application after equipping yourself with a good understanding of our Department’s educational goals and curriculum.

A Please write, either in Japanese or English, about the significant activities you have been involved in to date and what you gained from that experience.
Q Do I need to submit a letter of recommendation from my high school? A No, letters of recommendation are not required.
Q Am I able to submit certificates that prove that I have a qualification or other materials that indicate my capabilities?
A If you have documents that help explain the self-recommendation points in your Personal Statement, please submit the copies (A4 size) when you apply for the first stage of screening.

Q What should I submit if I attended Japanese high school first, and transferred to a high school in another country and graduated?
A If you attended more than one high school, please submit academic transcripts from each school. Please give the dates that you left and entered the respective schools. If it is not possible to submit an academic transcript, please submit copies of your grade reports from each semester attended. (e.g. As issued in the British education system). Q Are there any reminders upon preparing application materials for applicants who graduated high
schools in overseas countries?
A If the documents are written in a language other than Japanese or English, please prepare its Japanese or English translation and submit this after having it verified as an accurate representation of the original by your high school or a government office such as an embassy. As a general rule, we request that you submit originals for all of the documents required for application. If only one original exists, please submit a copy after having it verified by your school of origin as a certified copy that accurately represents the original.

A There is no online application system for this examination. We request that you fill in or prepare the required documents and submit them by registered special delivery post within the period specified for receipt of applications.

Q After passing the first-stage examination, is it possible to cancel my application to take the second-stage examination?
A Yes, it is possible. If you do not carry out the procedure for the second-stage within the application period, the University will assume that you have decided not to go any further.
Q What ability will be evaluated in the essay writing section of the second-stage examination?
A The essay writing section will test your ability to read and understand a passage written about an aspect of society or culture, to summarize its content in Japanese and English, and to express your opinion in Japanese or English about what you read.
Q Is the language to be used for the second-stage presentation specified? And what type of presentation should I deliver?
A Your presentation should be either in Japanese or English. It should expand on what you stated in your Personal Statement.
Q Can we use a computer during the presentation? Is it possible to request a data-projector?
A We will prepare a computer (Windows) and projector for your presentation. However, if you require a special type of computer or presentation software, you will have to provide them yourself. Those who pass the first-stage examination will be asked about their presentation style and the equipment they wish to use.
Q When will we find out the order of our presentations?
A For those details, please look at the materials that you will receive at reception on the day of the second-stage examination.

Q According to the official guide, the presentation time is 15 minutes per person. Would it be acceptable if my presentation were a little longer than that?
A To ensure the fairness in time allocation during the screening process, we request you keep to the designated time limit. Q Which language should the presentation be delivered in, Japanese or English?
A Please choose the language that will allow you to make the best impression and to show your ability well. Q Will the second-stage interview carried out in English or Japanese?
A It will be carried out in both Japanese and English.
Q What kind of questions will I be asked in the interview?
A You will be asked to explain why you are applying to GLS and what you have done to date. Also how this relates to your career and life plan, and how these link to your study in GLS.

In such a case, your having sat the Special AO Admission examination for GLS will be neither to your advantage nor disadvantage.
Q Is it possible to request an extension of the admissions procedure period?
A No, it is not possible. If you do not carry out the procedure within the set period, you will be deemed to have opted not to be admitted.
Q If I pass the admissions examination for another Nanzan University department after passing the GLS Special AO Admission examination and carrying out the admissions procedure, am I able to change my department?
A Yes, it is possible to change departments. Please carry out the admissions procedure specified by the department that you were successful for within the period they set for enrolment.
Q What is the “pre-enrolment guidance”?
A Pre- enrolment guidance will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019. We give the details to the students who are accepted.
