形容詞dueがHisabsence was due to  illness.とかDueto  illness he  was absent(1) .のように使われる場合，前者のduetoの用法は正しいが，後者 のduetoの用法は正しくないとされている， あるいは， 正しくないとされ てきた。

His absence was due to  illness.のduetoは大英和の dueadj. 5の項 にある「（原因を）（．．．に）帰すべき，（事が）（．．．に）起因して，（．．．の）せい で（ある） （to  be attributed)  (to)」の意である。 これに対して， Due to  illness he was absent.や語順をかえた Hewas absent due to  illness.の due toは同じ大英和の dueto (2)の項にある「（（口語））．．．のために，の理由 から(owingto,  because of)」の意で使われている。前者のduetoのdue はwasの補語になり叙述形容詞として使われているので，itis true to...と する場合の形容詞 trueと同じであり形容詞としては普通の用法ということ になる。すなわち，形容詞dueはbe動詞wasを通して主語のHisabsence  という名詞を修飾している。しかし，後者のduetoのdueは，前者の due とは異なって形容詞として修飾する名詞がな<,duetoが大英和の定義にあ るように owingto,  because ofの意の理由を表わす語として使われている (1) Brian Foster,  The Changing English Language.  (Pelican  Books, 1970)

理由を表わす．dueto'に関する一考察（中間） (389)  15  ので正しくないとされているのである。その意味で大英和は，後者の場合の du~ toの用法に（（口語））のラペルを付し，「＊（2）の用法は不正確なものとされ ているが，通俗に行われている。」との註記を与えているのであろう。すなわ ち，この用法は形容詞dueの用法としては正確ではなく，主として話しこと ばで使われることを示し，堅い書きことばでは避けられることを示唆してい ると考えられよう。

He was absent due to  illness.のような duetoの用法を正しくないと しているものに， COD4とCOD5(3) を挙げることができる。 CODは第5版 でも第4版と同じように，この文と同じ使い方である Icame late  due to  an accident.を用例として挙げ，このような文の owing toにかわる副詞

的な duetoの使い方は incorrectである，と明記している。次に， Wood  も

， duetoのdueは形容詞なので (a)His absence is due to  illness.  The  accident ~as due to  the driver's  failing to  give a signal.の文にある

ように， dueをbe動詞の補語として predicativeに使うか， （bl  Mistakes  due to carelessness may have serious consequences. A power failure,  due to a fault in the cable,  brought all the machiri~ery to a standstill.の 文にあるように， dueが形容詞として前にある名詞を直接に修飾するように 使うのが正しく， （c)  Due to  illness,  he was unable to  go on his holi‑ day.  Many trains were late,  due to  the fog.  Due to  the state of the  ground,  the match has been postponed.のように duetoをcompound prepositionとして理由を表わす副詞句を導く使い方は正しくないので， due toを owingtoまたは becauseofにかえるべきである，としている。

Woodの説明を整理して考えると，冒頭に挙げた Hisabsence was due  to  illness.が Woodの例文(a)に相当し，これを Hisabsence  due to  ill‑

ness..．にすると例文(b)ということになり，さらに Dueto  illness he was  absent.が正しくないとされる(c)の例文に相当することになる。上述の COD ゃWoodの記述はイギリス英語を中心にしたものであるが，アメリカ英語を

中心に述べている Strunkも， Helost the first game due to careless‑ ness.における through, because of,  owing toにかえられる duetoは looseな用法なので Helost the first game because of carelessness.の ようにすべきであるとし，さらに Woodの(a)(b)の用例に相当する Theac‑ cident was due to bad weather.  losses due to preventable firesをdue toの正用法として挙げている。

以上の記述に従うと，商業通信文の中で Wecannot supply this article  for about three weeks,  due to  a strike in our factory last month.のよ

うに書いた場合の duetoゃ，英字新聞の報道記事に散見される下記のよう な用例の duetoの用法は正しくないということになる。

‑Mainichi Daily News,  April 20,  1976  しかしながら，冒頭に挙げた Dueto illness he was  absent.の例文に 見られるような owingto,  because ufの意の理由を表わす duetoは，こ れから挙げる多数の用例が示すように，正しくないとされながらも，現実に はあらゆる種類の書きことばに使われていると言えよう。本稿では，この正 しくないとされている理由を表わす duetoが硯代英語でどのように使われ ているのか，この語法に対する語法学者の考え方，結論としてこの語法は正

しいのか，正しくないのかについて考察を行ないたい。

上記用例a‑1. a‑9.のduetoの用法は，冒頭に挙げた例文Hisabsence  was due to illness.の duetoと同じであり，形容詞 dueはそれぞれbe 動詞の補語として predicativeに使われている。b‑1.b‑6．の用例における due toの dueも，それぞれ dueの前の名詞を修飾し， 形容詞としての働 きをしている。ただa.の用例と異なるのはbe動詞がないことである。しか し， b‑1.を例にとれば Thepossibility of a loss which was due to ex‑ change fluctuationsのようにパラフレーズすることができ， whichwasが

省略されていると考えられるので，用例b‑1. b‑6.のdueも，結局はa‑1. a‑9.の用例における dueと同じであることがわかる。これら a‑1. a‑9.  及びb‑1.b:...6.の用例における duetoは，既に考察したように，形容詞の dueが形容詞として用いられているので正しいとされている用法である。で は，下記の C．のdueは形容詞として正しくない用法ということになるのだ ろうか。
