Introduction
The
Phuh

'i rab tubyedpa,
writtenby
Candrakirti
and preservedonlyin
its
Tibetan
translation, isone of the most important sourcesfbr
investigating
the Madhyamakaschool's understanding of
Sarvastivada
Abhidharrna.
The
Tibetan
text,based
on thePeking
and sNar thafieditions, was published
by
Ch.
Lindtner
in
1979,but
in
theyearssince therehave beenno translations and few studies devotedto it.The author of thispaperiscurrently
in
theprocessofpreparing a criticalTibetan

on thefive
editions, and ananno-tated

translation.In
thecourse of theseprejects,theauthorhas

, adopting thetitlethatis
shown atthebegin-ning of the
Tibetan

on thebasis
of thetitlesshownin
the colophon and mentionedin
other texts,we can positthatit
was originally called "Paficaskandhaka."Recently,the
Sanskrit
textofVasubandhu's
work on paficaskandhaand itscommentary bySthirarnati
have
been
published, providingnew sources of evidence tosupport this alter-nate title.Inthispaper,
we wouldlike
toinvestigate
theterm "rabtu

in
theTibetantitle, and toconsider thepossibilitythatitwas appended inorder toshow itsbelonging

the

as well as the catalogues of the Peking and sDe dge edition(P

We would also liketoinvestigatethe usage of theterm "rab tbl

(Objection:)
Because[we
havealready] explained the characteristics ofthe dharmasinthetreatisessuch as the Ybgaca-rabhtimi and so fbrth,it would be useless effort toexplain them
again.
(Answer:)
No, itwould not useless. Because itisforthe benefitof the wise disciples.Thewise ones think much ofa summarized

not a detailedone, becausetheycan perfectlyderstandthedetailedarguments derivedfromthese

(p.
1,tl.41O)Accordingtothis
passage,
it
is
certain thatthePSkhad
been
categorized as `)rakararpa"in
India.
Thus,
we suggestthe
possibilitythatthe term Clpraharaua" was addedin
Tibeton thebasisof thistraditionalIndianclassification. Among Tibetantranslations, there are also
other cases where thisterrnhasbeen added tothe frontof theirtitles, such as
"Prakararpa-bhidhamitivat5ra"
(D
no. 4097,P no. 5599).3) Now, wehave
to examine thesignificanceof adding thetrem `Prakara4a" tothesetitles.4)As
a translationof "prakararpa,"
"mone-graph"
wouldbe
most common rendering, thoughit
can also mean "chapter."When
we seethetitlesofthe
Buddhist
Tibetantranslationsthatincludethisterm,however,
we note thatthey tendto
be
short, concise treatises.5)As thepreviousquoted
passage
demonstrates,
thePSk,
in
its
summary of thecharacteristics of theduarmas, canbe
seen asjust
such a text. Thus,we can make the generalpresumptionthat, inthiscontext, the term `Prakararpa"
re-fers
topanicularly
short, concise treatisesinthe Buddhisttradition, which means thatitin-The Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies

Conclusion
Inthispaper,we haveprovedthatthe
Sanskrit

consideredto
be
"Paficaskandhaka,"and
have
proposedtorefer toit
conventionally as"Madhyamaka-paficaskandhaka"toavoid theconfusion with
Vasubandhu's
PSk.
As
fbr
theterm "rab tubyedpa,"
we have pointedout thepossibilitythatitwas appended toTibetan
titlesin
ordertoshow
that
theybelonged
toagenre
of concisedoctrinal
summaries. However, we are aware eflimitation
ofthis
argument, giventhatthispresentpaperonly consider thisissueinlightofthe PSk and
MPSk.
In
order tomake theargument more compelling,it
wouldbe
necessary toconsider a wider range ofthe texts,includingnon-Buddhist sources.
