FOREWORD

Special Section on Data Engineering and Information Management

It is our great pleasure to publish this special section on data engineering and information management.

The Ninth Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management (DEIM Forum 2017), held in March 2017 in Takayama, has been recognized as the largest forum in Japan collecting a broad spectrum of aca- demic and industrial research presentations related to data engineering and information management. In connection with the DEIM Forum, we planned to publish this special section in the Transactions on Infor- mation and Systems from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE).

We invited submissions of papers in the broad field of data engineering and information management, and particularly encouraged submissions on topics of emerging interest in engineering and management of Big Data.

The editorial committee received 31 papers and each paper was reviewed by at least two anonymous referees. After the deep and intensive reviews, the editorial committee has finally selected 1 survey paper and 10 research papers that offer high-quality and outstanding research results. Those papers cover a range of topics including Web mining, machine learning, geographical database, and multimedia database analysis.

I would like to thank the referees and the editorial committee members for their dedicated efforts. I would also like to express my gratitude to Guest Editors, Prof. Qiang Ma of Kyoto University, Dr. Hiroyuki Toda of NTT Corporation, and Prof. Yasuhiko Morimoto of Hiroshima University, for excellent organization of the entire editing process. I hope that this special section contributes to the continued success and growth of data engineering and information management research community.

Editorial Committee Members:

Guest Editors: Qiang Ma (Kyoto Univ.), Hiroyuki Toda (NTT), Yasuhiko Morimoto (Hiroshima Univ.) Guest Associate Editors: Yukino Baba (Kyoto University), Koji Eguchi (Kobe Univ.), Miki Enoki (IBM

Research Tokyo), Yasuhiro Fujiwara (NTT), Takashi Inui (Univ. of Tsukuba), Akimitsu Kanzaki (Shimane Univ.), Yasuhiko Kanemasa (Fujitsu Labs.), Hideyuki Kawashima (Univ. of Tsukuba), Kyoungsook Kim (AIST), Hisashi Miyamori (Kyoto Sangyo Univ.), Hiroaki Ohshima (Univ. of Hyogo), Satoshi Oyama (Hokkaido Univ.), Jun Sakuma (Univ. of Tsukuba), Takahiko Shintani (Univ.

of Electro-Communications), Taro Tezuka (Univ. of Tsukuba), Kei Wakabayashi (Univ. of Tsukuba), Bin Yang (Hitachi), Masaharu Yoshioka (Hokkaido Univ.)

Masashi Toyoda

(The University of Tokyo),Guest Editor-in-Chief

Masashi Toyoda(Member) is an associate professor of the Institute of Industrial Sci- ence, the University of Tokyo, Japan. He received the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in computer science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. His research interests in- clude web mining, user interfaces, information visualization, and internet of things. He serves as a vice-chair of Technical Committee on Data Engineering. He is a member of IPSJ, DBSJ, ACM, and IEEE Computer.
