Monolayer Behaviors of Amphiphilic Double-Decker-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) have attracted much interest because of their unique chemical and well-defined geometric shape. The well-defined organic-inorganic architecture is suitable for building a block to create hybrid nanostructure of which components are organized in nanometer orders. In this paper we synthesize amphiphilic POSSs, which consist of double-decker-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (DDSQ) as a hydrophobic core and diethyle glycol units as hydrophilic coronae. We attached hydrophilic diethylene glycol units to the reactive hydrosilane groups using hydrosilylation reaction to prepare two and tetra-armed amphiphilic DDSQs. Their structures were confirmed with 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR, FT-IR, and MALDI-TOF Mass. spectroscopy. Monolayer properties of amphiphilic DDSQs were characterized by surface pressure () –area (A) isotherm and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) at the air/water interface. Stable monolayers of synthesized compounds were formed using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. However, only tetra-armed DDSQ monolayer can be transferred onto the solid substrate by using a vertical dipping method. The film morphology was characterized by AFM and UV-vis spectroscopy. It was realized that the morphological properties of the monolayer changed depending on the substrate. Although monolayer was transferred on the hydrophilic substrate in dot structure, homogeneous monolayer is successfully formed on the hydrophilic substrate. The homogenous film formation can be attributed to good interaction between OH groups of the substrate and diethylene glycol units attached to DDSQ core.

Surface Modification with Photoreactive Polymer Nanosheets for Flow Control in Microchannel

We investigated water ow behavior in surface-modied microchannels. We prepared straight-type microchannels which had rectangular cross sections with four different combinations of microchannel surface wettability; cleaned glass substrates served as hydrophilic microchannel walls and the microchannel walls coated with polymer Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films were used as hydrophobic surfaces. The polymer LB lms were successfully transferred onto glass substrates by vertical dipping method. The ow rates and the water meniscus shape strongly depended on the microchannel surface wettability. The decrease in ow rate with the increasing number of hydrophobic (polymer LB lm) surface was attributed to the higher adhesion energy of hydrophobic surface. The Reynolds number was also characterized to be in the order of 10Ѹ1, implying a specic feature of

microchannel; laminar ow.
