Using discourse analysis to inspire task design in ESP
MULLER Theron 富山大学 There are an increasing number of discipline-specific discourse analysis fields emerging which concentrate primarily on critical analysis of professional dialog in order to inform practice in English speaking countries, such as the discipline of doctor-patient discourse analysis. Such investigations offer a rich source for inspiring task work in the language classroom using extracts of authentic language for both language skills work and meaning-focused communication work, yet how language teachers can successfully transform a discourse analysis-based research article into a classroom task suitable for and compatible with Japanese learners of English is not clear. This presentation addresses this problem through sharing several such adapted tasks and how they were transformed from the journal articles they were based on into classroom task activities. Where appropriate, student reactions to and reflections on the activities will also be shared, along with samples of student task production. Based on the presenter’s experience of developing such tasks for his ESP classroom, principles concerning such task design will be summarized. Participants should expect to gain insight and tools to assist them in creating their own adapted tasks for their ESP and general English courses based on published discourse analysis research.
