授業科目とアカデミックサポート

ニューヨークについてから 3 か月以上が過 ぎ，また，秋学期が始まってから 2 か月近くが 過ぎました。本レポートではこれまでに Queens
Collegeで受講している授業科目とアカデミック
サポートについて述べます。
授業科目
私は現在，グローバルFD研修のための特 別講座Teaching in English (TiE)とAcademic Language Support Courseの他に，単位取得科 目としてComputer Architecture(CS343/CS744) と ， 聴 講 科 目 と し て Distributed Computing (CS344/CS715) ， Introduction to Web Programing(CS081)を受講しています。
Computer Architecture クラスでは，講義用 資料が Web 上に置かれ，受講者は授業が始 まる前に見ることができます。しかしながら，講 師が講義中に講義資料を使うことはほとんどな く，多くの時間が学生への質問となっています。
つまり，この授業では事前に講義資料に目を 通しておくことが求められています。講師の質 問に対して，学生が間違った解答をした時，講 師はあえて，間違った理論を進め，学生自身 が間違いに気付くまで続けられることがありま す。とても早口で議論が進むために聞き取りが 大変です。（写真1）
Distributed Computingクラスでは黒板を使 った講義形式で行われています。このクラスで も予め講義資料（必要に応じてスケルトンプロ グラムも）が Web 上に公開されており，講師が 基本的な説明をした後に学生に質問をしなが らスケルトンプログラムを埋めていき学生の理 解度を確認しています。（写真2）
Introduction to Web Programingクラスはパ ソコン室での演習形式で行われます。講師が PowerPointを使ってHTMLやCSSの説明を

アカデミックサポート
Queens College Academic Support Lab (Kiely Hall 131) では，留学生に対して色々な サポートを提供しています。私は，週1回1時 間の Conversation クラスに参加しています。
Conversationクラスではディベートのような形で
「銃を所持すること」や「日本人ジャーナリスト の誘拐事件」をどう思うかなどについて話し合 いました。とても良い会話の練習になっていま す。
アカデミックサポートでは Conversation クラ ス の 他 に も Reading， Pronunciation や Writingクラスもあります。 Pronunciationクラス は人気があるようで空きができるまで待たなけ
ればなりませんが，Reading クラスには今週か ら参加することになりました。
次回の報告書ではReading クラスと可能で あればPronunciationクラスについて書きたいと 思います。Kiely Hall 131に行き（Writingクラ スは別の部屋のようです），早めに登録するこ とをお勧めします。
QC における研修受講と英語力の変化について

1. はじめに
Queens Collegeでの研修も3ヶ月が過ぎ，は やくも折り返し地点を通過しました. New York は秋本番で非常に過ごしやすい季節です．本 報告では，これまでの研修内容とそれに伴う具 体的な英語力の変化を私個人の実例をあげ て報告いたします.
2. ELI(English Learning Institute)クラス QCに来てから1ヶ月半, 7月から8月中旬 の期間に，英語を第２言語として学ぶ学習者 を対象としたELIクラスで，週４日，毎日6時間，
ライティング，リーディング，スピーキング，リス ニングを学びました．ELI クラス期間開始前に 受けたクラス分けテスト(placement test)により，
5A（上から２番目）のクラスに配属されました．
私のクラスメイトの出身国は日本を始め，中国，
韓国，台湾，コロンビア，イラン，ベラルーシ等，
国際色豊かでした．特に印象に残っている授 業は，リスニング・スピーキングの授業でのディ ベートです．私たちのクラスでは妊娠中絶や法 定飲酒年齢の引下げの是非を問うディベート を行いました．英語で議論することの難しさに 加え，自分がディベートに関して非常に不慣 れなことを実感しました．私が受けてきた教育 と短い教員生活の中で，ディベートを行う機会 がどれだけあったでしょうか．日本とアメリカの
根本的な教育の違いが垣間見え，その教育に より育まれる人間性や精神構造の相違につい て納得させられました．
3. Fall semester 受講講義
8月27日からFall semesterが始まりました．
私 は Information and Intelligence, College Writing, お よ び ，Introduction to Algorithm Problem Solving を 受 講 し て い ま す ． Information and IntelligenceはQCでのメンタ ー教員の担当科目であり，私の単位取得科目 です．この科目は Freshman を対象とした授業 で，アルゴリズムに関する座学と，Arduinoを用 いた実習からなります(図1)．受講人数は約20 名です．実習でのクラスメイトとの回路やプログ ラミングに関するやりとりは実用的な英会話の 練 習 に な っ て い ま す ．College Writing は Information and Intelligenceと同クラスに対して の開講科目であり，同クラスメイトと受講してい ます．英語で Computer Science に関連した
Essay を書くスキルを身につけるための授業で
あり，毎回，多くのEssayの読解の宿題がありま す ． Introduction to Algorithm Problem
Solving は C++言語によるプログラミング初学
者に対する座学の講義です．この講義の受講 人数は約130名で，広い階段教室で受講して います．

7. まとめ
本報告では，これまでの研修内容とそれに 伴う具体的な英語力の変化に着目して述べま した．各種試験の結果を見ると英語力は向上 しているように思われます．しかしながら，ネイ ティブスピーカーの普段の英会話では聞き取 れない部分がまだ多くあり，スピーキング力も まだまだ未熟です．今後も引き続き勉強してい きたいと思います．

Three months have already passed since we arrived at New York. And one and a half months have passed since fall semester started.
In this report, I’d like to talk about lectures that I take and Queens College Academic Support Lab.
Lectures
I currently take Computer Architecture class (CS343/CS744) for credits. I also take Distributed Computing class (CS344/CS715) and Introduction to Web Programing class (CS081) as an observation class. Totally I take three classes, however the ways of teaching are very different.
In Computer Architecture class, lecture slides are uploaded on the website. Students can see the lecture slide before the class.
However, the professor doesn’t use the lecture slide in the class. This probably means, the professor assumes students read the lecture slide before the class. In the class, the professor speaks very fast, and often asks questions to students. (Photo1)
In Distributed Computing class, lecture notes and skeleton programs are uploaded on the website before the class. The professor writes down skeleton programs on the blackboard, then the professor asks questions to students for completing the programs. I think this class also assumes students have read lecture slides before the class. (Photo2)
In Introduction to Web Programing class, the professor uses PowerPoint to explain HTML and CSS. This class is an exercise class.

Academic Support Lab
Queens College Academic Support Lab (Kiely Hall 131) gives foreign students language support class. I have attended Conversation class three times so far. In the Conversation class, we debated “remake movie (Death Note)”, “should have gun or not”, etc. It was very good English practice for me.

6. Change of English ability
Let me show my scores of the examinations we have taken so far. The score of TOEIC I took in last April was about 600, and the result of TSST test in ALC Press Inc. was Level 4.
The result of second TSST test I got right after coming to the United States was Level 5. Table 1 shows my placement and final exam scores in ELI.

7. Summary
In this report, I described the contents of the training in Queens College and the change of my English ability. The results of examinations show that I have improved my English step by step. However, I still have difficulty to listen to details in conversations among native speakers, and also my speaking skill is not enough yet. I will keep up studying, and I hope my English will improve more.
