Topic: Articles used with Generic Count Nouns (5-6 minutes) (総称の可算名詞につく冠詞)
Nouns can be classified into three, according to meaning: Definite (writer and reader share common knowledge of the subject), Indefinite (writer and reader do not share common
knowledge of the subject), and Generic. Generic count nouns are nouns that represent a whole class, not just a specific individual or a group . Since Generic Count nouns may be expressed in different ways, a proper article should be used each time. It may be one of the following: (名詞は意味によって3つの種類に分けられます。①特定の名詞(書き手と読み手が主語 について共通の知識をもつ)、②不特定の名詞(書き手と読み手が主語について共通の知 識をもたない)、③総称の名詞です。総称の可算名詞とは、何かを個々ではなく全体で 表す名詞をいいます。総称の可算名詞はそのつど違う形で表されるので、異なった冠詞 が必要になります。例をみてみましょう。)
a. “The” – the generic count noun is singular and refers to the collective general idea of the word itself.
“The” – 総称の可算名詞が単数で、その名詞の中でも特定のものを表している場 合

b. “A / An” – the generic count noun is singular. We do not use “the” because it is used as a noun specific to one but used to represent a whole idea.

Remember:
The usual application of “a/an” and “the” in definite and indefinite count nouns is altered when dealing with Generic Count Nouns. Make sure to note proper subject-verb agreement when dealing with either singular or plural subjects.
(ポイント:総称の可算名詞では、名詞が特定のものかそうでないかによって、“a/an” と “the”を使い分ける。また、動詞は名詞の単数形、複数形を受ける形にする。)
