FOREWORD

Special Section on Foundations of Computer Science

——Mathematical Foundations and Applications of Computer Science and Algorithms——

We are very happy to publish this special section on Foundations of Computer Science. This is the ninth section of this title. This series of special sections on Foundations of Computer Science has contributed greatly to promote research progress in this field, and all sections have been high quality papers. The series is becoming more and more international. Unfortunately, however, this section has fewer foreign submissions than previous sections.

The submission deadline of this special section was extended by a week because of the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster. In spite of its chaotic aftermath, we have had fourteen submissions, including papers from universities heavily damaged by the disaster. We are impressed by the strength of the human spirit in overcoming the difficulties caused by the disaster. Among those submissions, eight papers were selected for publication through careful review.

We greatly appreciate all the authors for their valuable contributions. We also thank the anonymous re- viewers for their voluntary work. It should be mentioned that to cover the wide-ranging fields with only eighteen editors took great effort. As the guest Editor-in-Chief of this special section, I would like to express my deep thanks to the guest associate editors for their considerable efforts.

Koichi Yamazaki(Member) received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degree in 1987, 1989, and 1995, respectively from Tokyo Denki University. He is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Gunma University. His research interests include graph algorithm, approx- imation algorithm, and graph theory.
