FOREWORD

Special Section on Data Engineering and Information Management

It is our great pleasure to publish this special section on data engineering and information management.

The Seventh Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management (DEIM Forum 2015), held in March 2015 in Fukushima, has been recognized as the largest forum in Japan collecting a broad spectrum of academic and industrial research presentations related to data engineering and information manage- ment. In connection with the DEIM Forum, we planned to publish this special section in the Transactions on Information and Systems from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE). We invited submissions of papers in the broad field of data engineering and information manage- ment, and particularly encouraged submissions on topics of emerging interest in engineering and manage- ment of Big Data.

The editorial committee received 38 papers and each paper was reviewed by two anonymous referees.

After the deep and intensive reviews, the editorial committee has finally selected 13 papers that offer high-quality and outstanding research results. Those papers cover a range of topics including paralle data processing algorithms, QA systems, spatial databases, data visualization, graph processing, and privacy.

I would like to thank the referees and the editorial committee members for their dedicated efforts. I would also like to express my gratitude to Guest Editors, Prof. Masayoshi Aritsugi of Kumamoto University, Prof. Kaoru Katayama of Tokyo Metropolitan University, and Dr. Hiroyuki Toda of NTT Corporation, for excellent organization of the entire editing process. I hope that this special section contributes to the continued success and growth of data engineering and information management research community.

Editorial Committee Members:

Guest Editors: Masayoshi Aritsugi (Kumamoto Univ.), Kaoru Katayama (Tokyo Metropolitan Univ.), Hiroyuki Toda (NTT)

Guest Associate Editors: Yuki Arase (Osaka Univ.), Koji Eguchi (Kobe Univ.), Yasuhiro Fujiwara (NTT), Takako Hashimoto (Chiba Univ. of Commerce), Hideitsu Hino (Univ. of Tsukuba), Takashi Inui (Univ. of Tsukuba), Yasuhiko Morimoto (Hiroshima Univ.), Hiroaki Ohshima (Kyoto Univ.), Makoto Onizuka (Osaka Univ.), Satoshi Oyama (Hokkaido Univ.), Jun Sakuma (Univ. of Tsukuba), Yu Suzuki (NAIST), Keishi Tajima (Kyoto Univ.), Masashi Toyoda (The Univ. of Tokyo), Masaharu Yoshioka (Hokkaido Univ.),

Toshiyuki Amagasa

(University of Tsukuba),Guest Editor-in-Chief

Toshiyuki Amagasa(Senior Member) received B.E., M.E., and Ph.D degrees from the Department of Computer Science, Gunma University in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respec- tively. Currently, he is an associate professor at Center for Computational Sciences and Divi- sion of Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Information and Systems, University of Tsukuba. His research interests cover database systems, Web mining, and database appli- cation in scientific applications. He is a senior member of IEICE and IEEE, and a member of IPSJ, DBSJ, and ACM.
