FOREWORD

Special Section on Data Engineering and Information Management

It is our great pleasure to publish this special section on data engineering and information management.

The Fifth Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management (DEIM Forum 2013), held in March 2013 in Fukushima, has grown to one of the largest conferences in Japan collecting a broad spectrum of academic and industrial research presentations related to data engineering and information manage- ment. In connection with the DEIM Forum, we planned to publish this special section in Transactions on Information and Systems from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE). We invited submissions of papers in the field of wide range of data engineering and information management, and particularly encouraged submissions on topics of emerging interest in engineering and management of Big Data.

The editorial committee received 39 papers, and reviewed by two anonymous referees each paper. After the deep and intensive reviews, the editorial committee has finally selected 20 papers (including two letters) offering high-quality and outstanding research results. Those papers cover a wide range of topics including data storage, topic models, spatial data, analysis of social network data, sensor data, query processing, time series data, and file data management.

I would like to thank the referees and the editorial committee members for their dedicated efforts. I would also like to express my gratitude to Guest Editors, Dr. Makoto Onizuka of NTT, Prof. Miyuki Nakano of Shibaura Institute of Technology, Prof. Masayoshi Aritsugi of Kumamoto University, and Prof. Takeo Kunishima of Okayama Prefectural University, for excellent organization of the entire editing process.

I hope that this special section contributes to the continued success and growth of data engineering and information management research community.

Editorial Committee Members:

Guest Editors:

Makoto Onizuka (NTT), Miyuki Nakano (Shibaura Inst. of Tech), Masayoshi Aritsugi (Kumamoto Univ.), Takeo Kunishima (Okayama Prefectural Univ.)

Guest Associate Editors:

Atsuyuki Morishima

(University of Tsukuba),Guest Editor-in-Chief

Atsuyuki Morishima(Member) is a professor at University of Tsukuba. He received his B.S., M.E. and Ph. D degrees in computer science from University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 1993, 1995 and 1998, respectively. His research interests include data integration and data- centric human/machine computations. His SIGMOD 2001 paper was the second runner-up for the best paper award. In 2009, he received the Kambayashi Award from the Database Society of Japan. He served as program committee members and conference officers in conferences in- cluding VLDB, SIGMOD, ICDE, EDBT, CIKM, ECDL, DASFAA, ICADL, XSym, PersDB, DBCrowd, and UnCrowd. He is a member of IEICE, IPSJ, DBSJ, IEEE-CS, and ACM.
