FOREWORD

Special Section on Data Engineering and Information Management

It is our great pleasure to publish this special section on data engineering and information management.

The Eighth Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management (DEIM Forum 2016), held in March 2016 in Fukuoka, has been recognized as the largest forum in Japan collecting a broad spectrum of aca- demic and industrial research presentations related to data engineering and information management. In connection with the DEIM Forum, we planned to publish this special section in the Transactions on Infor- mation and Systems from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE).

We invited submissions of papers in the broad field of data engineering and information management, and particularly encouraged submissions on topics of emerging interest in engineering and management of Big Data.

The editorial committee received 35 papers and each paper was reviewed by two anonymous referees.

After the deep and intensive reviews, the editorial committee has finally selected 15 papers that offer high-quality and outstanding research results. Those papers cover a range of topics including distributed computing, social computing, machine learning, privacy, crowdsourcing, and QA systems.

I would like to thank the referees and the editorial committee members for their dedicated efforts. I would also like to express my gratitude to Guest Editors, Dr. Hiroyuki Toda of NTT Corporation, Prof.

Kaoru Katayama of Tokyo Metropolitan University, and Prof. Qiang Ma of Kyoto University, for excellent organization of the entire editing process. I hope that this special section contributes to the continued success and growth of data engineering and information management research community.

Special Section Editorial Committee Members:

Guest Editors: Hiroyuki Toda (NTT), Kaoru Katayama (Tokyo Metropolitan Univ.), Qiang Ma (Kyoto Univ.)

Guest Associate Editors: Yuki Arase (Osaka Univ.), Koji Eguchi (Kobe Univ.), Yasuhiro Fujiwara (NTT), Hideitsu Hino (Univ. of Tsukuba), Takako Hashimoto (Chiba Univ. of Commerce), Akimitsu Kanzaki (Shimane Univ.), Junpei Kawamoto, Yasuhiko Kanemasa (Fujitsu Labs.), Hideyuki Kawashima (Univ. of Tsukuba), Hisashi Miyamori (Kyoto Sangyo Univ.), Yasuhiko Morimoto (Hiroshima Univ.), Hiroaki Ohshima (Kyoto Univ.), Satoshi Oyama (Hokkaido Univ.), Jun Sakuma (Univ. of Tsukuba), Takahiko Shintani (The Univ. of Electro-Communications), Yu Suzuki (NAIST), Taro Tezuka (Univ.

of Tsukuba), Masaharu Yoshioka (Hokkaido Univ.)

Makoto Onizuka

(Osaka University),Guest Editor-in-Chief

Makoto Onizuka(Member) is a professor in the Graduate School of Information Sci- ence and Technology at the Osaka University. He received his PhD in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. His main research is in the area of database systems, with special interest in graph mining algorithms, distributed query optimization, and exploratory search. He is a recipient of the IPSJ Yamashita SIG Research Award (2004) and the DBSJ Kambayashi Award for Young Researcher (2008). He serves as a vice-chair of Technical Committee on Data Engineering. He is a member of IEICE, IPSJ, DBSJ, and ACM.
