FOREWORD

Special Section on Data Engineering and Information Management

It is our great pleasure to publish this special section on data engineering and information management.

The Sixth Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management (DEIM Forum 2014), held in March 2014 in Hyogo, has grown to one of the largest conferences in Japan collecting a broad spectrum of aca- demic and industrial research presentations related to data engineering and information management. In connection with the DEIM Forum, we planned to publish this special section in Transactions on Informa- tion and Systems from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE).

We invited submissions of papers in the broad field of data engineering and information management, and particularly encouraged submissions on topics of emerging interest in engineering and management of Big Data.

The editorial committee received 33 papers and each paper was reviewed by two anonymous referees.

After the deep and intensive reviews, the editorial committee has finally selected five papers that offer high-quality and outstanding research results. Those papers cover a range of topics including transaction processing, file data management, information retrieval, image feature tracking, and linguistic analysis.

I would like to thank the referees and the editorial committee members for their dedicated efforts. I would also like to express my gratitude to Guest Editors, Prof. Masayoshi Aritsugi of Kumamoto University, Prof. Kaoru Katayama of Tokyo Metropolitan University, and Prof. Makoto Onizuka of Osaka University, for excellent organization of the entire editing process. I hope that this special section contributes to the continued success and growth of data engineering and information management research community.

Editorial Committee Members:

Guest Editors: Masayoshi Aritsugi (Kumamoto Univ.), Kaoru Katayama (Tokyo Metropolitan Univ.), Makoto Onizuka (Osaka Univ.)

Guest Associate Editors: Toshiyuki Amagasa (Univ. of Tsukuba), Yuki Arase (Osaka Univ.), Koji Eguchi (Kobe Univ.), Takako Hashimoto (Chiba Univ. of Commerce), Hideitsu Hino (Univ. of Tsukuba), Takashi Inui (Univ. of Tsukuba), Yasuhiko Morimoto (Hiroshima Univ.), Hiroaki Ohshima (Kyoto Univ.), Satoshi Oyama (Hokkaido Univ.), Jun Sakuma (Univ. of Tsukuba), Nobutaka Suzuki (Univ.

of Tsukuba), Yu Suzuki (Nara Inst. Sci. Tech.), Keishi Tajima (Kyoto Univ.), Hiroyuki Toda (NTT), Masashi Toyoda (The Univ. of Tokyo), Masaharu Yoshioka (Hokkaido Univ.)

Shinsuke Nakajima

,Guest Editor-in-Chief

Shinsuke Nakajima(Member) is an associate professor at Kyoto Sangyo Univer- sity. He received his B.S. and M.E. degrees in mechanical engineering from Kobe University, Japan, and received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1995, 1997 and 2004, respectively. His research interests include social media mining and recommender systems. He served as program committee members and conference officers in conferences/workshops including ASONAM, SocInfo, MDM, WAIM, APWeb, KJDB, and ISWC. He is a member of IEICE, IPSJ, DBSJ, IEEE-CS, and ACM.
