Hairy r o o t s  o f  a l f a l f a  were o b t a i n e d  from h y p o c o t y l s  i n f e c t e d  w i t h   Agrob α c t e r i u m   r h

The r o o t s  had c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s  o f  v i g o r o u s  growth and e x t e n ‑ s i v e  l a t e r a l  branching on a  h o r m o n e ‑ f r e e  medium

The r a t e s  o f  h a i r y  r o o t  f o r m a t i o n   were v e r y  low ，  and were d i f f e r e n t  among t h e  c u l t i v a r s  o f  a l f a l f a  used i n  t h i s  e x p e r i ‑ ment ，  They ranged from 0  t o  2 ，  2% ，  Mikimopine was d e t e c t e d  by h i g h ‑ v o l t a g e  paper  e l e c t r o p h o r e s i s  o f  e x t r a c t s  o f  h a i r y  r o o t s

R h i z o g e n i c  a b i l i t y  i s   c o n f e r r e d  t o  p l a n t  c e l l s  by  a  fragment o f  DNA (T ‑DNA) which i s   t r a n s ‑ f e r r e d  from t h e  r o o t ‑ i n d u c i n g   ( R i )   plasmid t o   t h e  p l a n t  genome ，  where i t   i s   s t a b l y  i n t e g r a t e d   and e x p r e s s e d

The  s e e d s  o f  a l f a l f a  were s u r f a c e  s t e r i l i z e d  w i t h  0 ̲   5% 

sodium h y p o c h l o r i t e  f o r  2 0  min and a s e p t i c a l l y   germinated i n  p e t r i  d i s h e s ，  The h y p o c o t y l s ，  0 ， 5
