In July 2016, Britain had an historic vote to leave or stay in the European Union (EU). It was a very big vote, with about 70% of people voting. Most people expected that the vote would say people wanted to stay in the EU, but in fact, the majority of people voted to leave. It was a very close vote, with only 4 percentage points difference between leave and stay.

The vote was divided by region and age. Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales voted against leaving. London and many other big cities also voted to stay in the EU. However, some other large cities and the areas outside the cities all voted to leave the EU in large numbers.

Research suggests that younger people voted to stay in the EU. As people got older, they were more likely to vote leave. In fact, in the 18 to 25 age group, three times as many people voted to stay as voted to leave. At the other end, less than 40% of people over 65 years old voted to stay. Unfortunately for the people who wanted to stay, not enough young people voted.

For many people, sports are a source of entertainment, inspiration and heroism. The Olympic Games show some of the( 1 )heroism – people overcoming pain, exhaustion and pressure. They are one of the greatest shows on earth. Although they are only one of many regional and international sporting events for athletes and gymnasts, none of them have the same ⑷ prestige as the Olympics. For the chance to compete for their national team in front of the world, and maybe even win a medal, athletes try harder and achieve more.

However, even more heroism is shown in the Paralympics. People with disabilities – either through accidents or accidents of birth – perform amazing feats of strength, speed, agility and skill, facing all the

same pressures as the able bodied athletes plus overcoming their own personal dificulties. Over the years, the

Paralympics have become bigger and more popular.

The irst Olympic event for people with disabilities was in the 1948 London Olympics, and included only 16 men and women injured during World War Two. The irst oficial Paralympic Games were held in 1960

in Rome, and four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Over the years, the number of events has increased from eight to 22 sports and 4,342 athletes in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

( 2 )of the athletes ⑸ participating in the Paralympics were born with their disabilities, others were disabled in accidents, during battles or other tragedies. A famous British Paralympian is Martine Wright, a volleyball player.( 3 )July 2005, she was one of hundreds of victims of a terrorist bomb attack on the London subway. She was trapped for over an hour, lost 80% of her blood and both of her legs. Only by luck,

determination and the help of an off-duty police oficer, was she able to stay alive long enough to be rescued.

After months of operations and many more months of learning to walk and survive without legs, she took up volleyball to help with her recovery. She became a great athlete and a leading member of the British sitting volleyball team. Her bravery, determination and charm made her a hero for the British people in the London 2012 Olympics, and for disabled people around the world.

It is people like Martine Wright and the many other disabled athletes who represent the real spirit of sporting heroism. The stories of such people can be so inspiring, and give us a little look into what can make a great athlete, and a great human being.
