FOREWORD

Special Section on Smart Multimedia & Communication Systems

The Special Section on Smart Multimedia & Communication Systems in this issue reviews and promotes recent progress in the smart multimedia and communication fields. The special section has solicited paper submissions particularly from, but not restricted to, researchers who presented their original works in the 2018 International Workshop on Smart Info-Media Systems in Asia (SISA 2018). The special section has accepted 11 papers and 5 letters out of 22 submissions through the regular reviewing process.

The Smart Info-Media Systems Technical Committee of the IEICE is conducting the SISA workshop series for boosting smart multimedia and communication research activities and encouraging young researchers in these fields in Asian countries to present their works. SISA 2018 was 12th workshop of SISA workshop series which started as International Workshop on Smart Info-Media Systems in Bangkok (SISB) in 2007. SISA 2018 was held in Atsugi, Kanagawa, Japan from Dec. 13 to 14 with great support from Kanagawa Institute of Technology (KAIT). We had two keynote speeches, 12 papers in SISA organized special sessions and 13 regular papers. SISA 2018 technical program committee selected two papers to be awarded as SISA Student Paper Awards.

As the Guest Editor-in-Chief of this special section, I would like to thank all the authors for contributing their submissions. I would also like to thank all the reviewers and the Guest Associate Editors, who have completed the task of reviewing papers in a short time period. Finally, I would like to express our appreciation to the Guest Editors, Professor Go Tanaka and Professor Hideaki Misawa, for their excellent editorial work.

Hirokazu Tanaka,Guest Editor-in-Chief

Hirokazu Tanaka (Senior Member) received his B.E. and ph. D. degrees in communications engineering from Osaka University, Suita and his second ph. D. degree in information sciences from Hokkaido University, Sapporo in 1989, 2001 and 2015, respectively. He joined Toshiba Corporation as a researcher in 1989. Since 2015, he has been a professor of Hiroshima City University. From 2007 to 2009, he was a visiting researcher at Hokkaido University and served as a visiting associate professor of Hokkaido University from 2007 to 2008. From 2013 to 2015, he was a visiting associate professor of Yokohama National University. Since 1997, Dr. Tanaka has been involved with international standardization activities in the field of mobile multimedia systems in ITU-T, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and Bluetooth. He actively contributed to defining technical specifications of video telephony systems, multimedia streaming systems, multimedia messaging systems, etc.

vice chair of TC Smart BAN in European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Since 2015, Dr. Tanaka serves as the convener of WG 1 (User Focus) for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Systems Committee Active Assisted Living (SyC. AAL). He received the ITU-AJ Award from the ITU Association of Japan in 1999. His research interests include theory and applications of modulation, error control coding, access control and audio/video coding, with emphasis on applications to mobile multimedia communications, broadcasting and dependable wireless communications and body area network for IoT systems. Dr. Tanaka is a senior member of IEEE.
