次の文章を読んで下の問いに答えなさい。

Some people in the United States, as everywhere else in the world, have serious physical and mental disabilities. Some are blind or deaf. Others cannot move around without a wheelchair. Still others may have low intelligence or suffer from a mental illness.

Until recently, people with major disabilities couldn’t find jobs. Employers just didn’t want to hire them. (--21--), most disabled people were unemployed and had to rely on government aid.

About ten years ago, however, a new law made it illegal to deny jobs to people just because they were handicapped. The law also required companies to make special arrangements for them. For example, they had to adjust desks for people in wheelchairs and install talking computers for blind people.

At first, employers grumbled about the law. But they had no choice. And once they started hiring disabled people, they discovered what eager and excellent workers they were. Thousands of the disabled now have good jobs. They’re delighted to earn a salary and do something useful instead of sitting home idle all day.

In high school, I joined many clubs and worked part-time at a local bakery. Now, I am a university student
