田 村 道 美

「カッセル国民文庫について」 （田村道美・近藤健児・中野光夫・瀬戸洋ー「絶版文庫嬉遊曲」

所収、青弓社、 2002年）の中で、 1886年から1913(?)年にかけてイギリスで刊行されたカッセル 国民文庫の4シリーズを紹介し、最後にアメリカ版第1期シリーズについても触れた。その後、ア メリカ版の新シリーズを 1点のみではあるが入手したので、アメリカ版カッセル国民文庫の二つの シリーズの相違点等について紹介してみたい。

アメリカ版第 1期シリーズのサイズは14X9. 8cmで、厚さは1.2cmである。これに対して、新シ リーズのサイズは13.8X9. 5cmで、厚さは0.8cmである。新シリーズの方がごくわずかではあるが、

小さくなって、厚さも薄くなっている。カッセル国民文庫の各冊の頁数はすべて192頁に統一され ている。したがって、両シリーズの厚さの違いは紙質の違いから来ている。表紙の色は、前者が鴬 色であるのに対して、後者は黄土色である。また、表紙のデザインも異なっている。デザインの相 違については、後に掲げた書影を参照されたい

アメリカ版カッセル国民文庫の二つのシリーズのうち、鉦者架蔵の第1期シリーズの一つThe Life of Lord Herbert of Cherburyの表紙に記されているタイトル等の文字をすべて示せば、次のよう である。

二つのシリーズの表紙の文字を比べてみると、週1回の発行、 1冊（紙装）の値段が10セント、

1年間の予約講読料が5ドル、編者はヘンリー・モーリー教授等は同じであると分かる。相違点と しては発行所の相違を挙げることができる。 「カッセル国民文庫について」で指摘したように、

カッセル社の社史 TheHouse of Cassell,  1848‑1958 (Cassell、1958)によれば、カッセル社は1860 年にニューヨークの公園通り、 37番地 (37Park Row~ に支社を開設した。翌年、南北戦争が勃発

したため、 1863年の初めに公園通りの支社は閉鎖されたが、南北戦争終結後まもなく、カッセル社 の代理店がブロードウェイ、 596番地 (596Broadway)に設立された。 1876年にオスカー ・M・ダ ナムが支店長となり辣腕を振い、 1888年には社屋を4番通り、 105・106番地 (104& 106 Fourth  Avenue)に あ る 大 き な ビ ル に 移 転 し た 。 筆 者 の 入 手 し た ア メ リ カ 版 カ ッ セ ル 国 民 文 庫 第 1期シ

リーズの発行年は1886年及び1887年である。 TheHouse of Cassell,  1848 ‑1958では触れられていな いが、カッセルのニューヨーク支社はブロードウェイ、 596番地から 4番通り、 104・106番地に移 転する間に、ブロードウェイ、 739・741番地にあるビルを社屋とした時期があったと推測される。

また、新シリーズが刊行された1900年前後には、ニューヨーク支社は西18通り、 7・9番地に移転 したようである。なお、 TheLife of Lord Herbert of Cherburyの表紙の最下段に "Copyright1886,  by 0. M. DUNHAM"とあるが、 "O. M. DUNHAM"は1876年にニューヨーク支店長となった「オ

スカー ・M・ダナム」である。

二つのシリーズのタイトル・ページの下部の発行所を見ると、第 1期シリーズでは "CASSELL

& COMPANY, LIMITED,  /739 & 741  BROADWAY, NEW YORK."となっており、刊行年はな ぃ。アメリカ版では、表紙の最上段に発行年月日が記されているから、タイトル・ページに記す必 要はなかったのであろう。一方、新シリーズのタイトル・ペ ーンでは、 "CASSELL and COMPA‑

NY,  LIMITED/LONDON,  PARIS,  NEW YORK & MELBOURNE"とあり、また刊行年 (1900年） が明記してある。新シリーズの発行所の表記の仕方はイギリス版のそれと同じである。さらに、新

シリーズでは、タイトル・ページの手前側の頁に刊行書目が印刷されているが、その刊行書目の冒

頭には、 "IN WEEKLY VOLUMES, price  3d.  ; or in  Cloth,  6d. / A SELECTION OF THE MOST  POPULAR VOLUMES IN/CASSELL'S  NATIONAL LIBRARY. /The following  are  amongst  those  already published,  and a full list  will be sent by the Publishers post free on application."という文章が ある。この文章によれば、紙装の値段は3dで，クロス装は6dとあるが、 3dは3ペンス、 6dは6ペン スのことである。ペンスはイギリスの単位であり、 3ペンスと 6ペンスは各々イギリス版カッセル 国民文庫の紙装とクロス装の値段である。これらのことから、理由は不明であるが、アメリカ版 カッセル国民文庫新シリーズはイギリス版、正確にはイギリス版選集シリーズのものをそのまま 使っていることがわかる。また、アメリカ版新シリーズとイギリス版選集シリーズの最終頁である 192頁目（カッセル国民文庫はすべて192頁で統一されている。）を見ると、どちらの版でもこの頁 の最下部に、 "Printed by Cassell & Company,  Limited,  La Belle Sauvage,  London,  E. C. "とある。

さらに、両シリーズの紙質と厚さは同じである。このことから、アメリカ版新シリーズはイギリス で印刷された選集シリーズの表紙を替えて、そのまま用いたものであることは明らかである。

ところで、筆者が入手したアメリカ版新シリーズの巻末には同文庫の刊行書目が著者アルファ ベット順に掲載されている。また、各作品の作品番号も併せて記されている。作品番号の最後の番 号は214である。 「カッセル国民文庫について」で見たように、この214はイギリス版カッセル国民 文庫第2期シリーズの刊行冊数である。したがって、アメリカ版カッセル国民文庫でも、イギリス の同文庫同様、第1期・第2期シリーズが刊行された後、新シリーズが刊行されたと考えられる。

なお、アメリカ版カッセル国民文庫新シリーズの巻末にある刊行書目とイギリスの第2期シリーズ との刊行書目を比べてみると、いくつか奇異な点があることが分かる。その一つは、作品番号の付 け方の違いである。 「カッセル国民文庫について」でも指摘したように、アメリカ版カッセル国民 文庫第1期シリーズはイギリス版が創刊されてから 1ヶ月後であったと考えられる。その根拠とし て、両文庫が週一冊のペースで刊行されたこと、イギリス版では 6番目に刊行されたバイロンの Childe Haroldがアメリカ版では2番目に刊行されたことを挙げた。また、理由は詳らかではない が、アメリカ版の作品刊行順は最初の10作品に関しては、イギリス版とかなり異なっている。その 最たるものはWarrenHastingsである。この作品はイギリス版第 1シリーズの第1回作品として刊行 されたが、アメリカ版ではなんと90番目の作品として刊行されている。ヘイスティングの東インド における過酷な政策や汚職等の問題に対して、アメリカ人が悪感情を抱いていたためかもしれない。

さらに奇妙なのは、アメリカ版には109番の作品がなく、さらに、 69番目の作品、トマス・ド・

クウインシーの Murderas a Fine Art,  and the English Mail Coachがイギリス版では刊行されては いないことである。この二つの事実によって、アメリカ版はイギリス版より刊行番号が二つ余分に 必要になるはずであるが、アメリカ版の最後の作品番号はイギリス版と同じく 214である。その理 由は、アメリカ版では157A・157B、158A・158Bという番号の付け方をして点数が214点になるよ うに調整されているからである。もちろん、刊行当初からこのような番号の付け方を考えていたは ずはなく、同一作品に対してイギリス版と異なった作品番号を採用したため、番号順にミスを生じ、

苦肉の策として157A・157B、158A・158Bのような番号付けをしたのであろう。また、アメリカ版 には190番の作品が二つある。シェイクスピアの TwelfthNight : or,  What You Willとリトルトン卿 の Dialoguesof the Deadである。 159以降の作品番号はイギリス版、アメリカ版ともに同じである から、アメリカ版 TwelfthNightもイギリス版のそれと同様199とすべきであろう。いずれにせよ、

アメリカ版の番号付けの杜撰さには首を傾げざるをえない。  

最後に、 Volumeについて触れておきたい。先に引用した TheLife of Lord Herbert of Cherburyの 表紙の最上段に Vol.II.,  No. 54. とあり、 TheDiscovery of MuscovyではVol.VIII.,  No. 385となっ ている。前者の No.54は、本文の最後に参考資料として掲げた「イギリス・アメリカ両カッセル

国民文庫第2期シリーズ全214冊の刊行書目及び作品番号」によっても明らかなように、 TheLife of  Lord Herbert of Cherburyの作品番号を表している。 TheDiscovery of Muscovyの作品番号は同「刊 行書目及び作品番号」によれば、 No.177である。しかし、筆者が入手した同作品の表紙にある作 品番号によれば、この作品はNo.385となっている。すでに述べたように、筆者が今回入手したア メリカ版新シリーズは、イギリス版第3期シリーズ（新シリーズ A) に相当するものである。イギ リス版第3期シリーズの刊行作品はイギリス版第2期シリーズと同じであり、作品数も同じく214 冊である。したがって、 385という作品番号はシリーズの全冊数の214をはるかに越えてしまってい

る。この疑問を解く一つの仮説は、アメリカ版で新シリーズを刊行する際に、 No.1にあたる作品 をNo.215  (214+ 1)としたのではないかということである。この推測が正しければ、 TheDiscovery  of Muscovyの作品番号は177+ 214 =391となり、 No.385にかなり近い数字となる。また、イギリス 版にはないVolumeの付け方の法則性を考えると、この仮説は妥当であると思われる。筆者の手許

にあるアメリカ版カッセル国民文庫4冊のVolumeとNo.は次のようになっている。

The Life of Lord Herbert of Cherbury,  Vol. II.,  No. 54.  (Feb. 5,  1887)  The Earl of Chatham,  Vol. II.,  No. 65.  (April 23,  1887) 

My Beautiful Lady,  Vol. II.,  No. 82.  (Aug.'20,  1887) 

この4例により、 Vol.I.  =No. 1 ‑50,  Vol. II.  =No. 51 ‑100という法則性があると考えられる。

これが正しければ、 Vol.III=No. 101 ‑150、Vol.IV=No.151‑200、Vol.V=No. 201‑214となる。

この法則を新シリーズに当てはめれば、 Vol.VI=No. 215‑264、Vol.VII=No. 265‑314、Vol.VIII 

=No. 315‑364、Vol.IX=No. 365‑414、Vol.X=No. 415‑428となる。これによれば、作品番号385 の TheDiscovery of MuscovyはVol.IXとなるはずであるが、実際にはVol.VIIIとなっている。この ズレも、第 1期のVol.Vの14冊をVol.IVに含めれば、解決されることになる。いずれにせよ、これ らの仮説はアメリカ版の各シリーズを出来うるかぎり入手することによって証明できるものである。

今後、 1冊でも多くのアメリカ版カッセル国民文庫の入手に努めたい。
