Although it was an uncomfortable summer again this year, with extremely hot weather and an abnormal climate, the children of Urayasu were very busy and active.
In the field of sports, Urayasu Little Senior League—a baseball team of Urayasu junior high school students—went on to the summer national championships for the first time in nine years. Furthermore, Hinode Junior High School baseball team was the first Urayasu junior high school to go to the Kanto regional championships in the 23 years since Tomioka Junior High went in 1991, and Hinode fin-ished in the final eight.
On August 9, a total of 18 students, two stu-dents per public junior high school in Urayasu City, participated in the prayers for peace cer-emony in Nagasaki City as “ambassadors of peace group,” and they participated in peace forums with junior high school students from various locations.
In addition, at the 26th Urayasu City Youth Marine Study Tour, 115 elementary and junior high school students, together with 30 group leaders and instructors, gained all sorts of valuable experience in the town of Hidaka of Hokkaido and other places, and they returned stronger and more mature.
Together with Director of Education Emiko Kuroda, I participated in the training program of Hometown Urayasu Risshi-juku, which was conducted from August 19 for two nights and three days.
Risshi-juku is a training program we started immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake. In the program, we invite three 2nd-year students per municipal junior high school. We choose students who are active in leadership positions, such as student council members or class representatives. The goal of the program is to train future leaders who will shoulder the responsibility of the next genera-tion, since we live in a day and age when we do not know what will happen next.
This year marks the third northeast Japan site observation tour, and we went to Minami-Sanriku Town, Ishinomaki City, and Onagawa Town, all in Miyagi Prefecture. The tour was intended to give students a firsthand sense of what has happened in the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and how things are now. Actually visiting these areas
stimu-lated students’ imagination.
This year, as training in advance, the stu-dents stayed overnight at Sports Park Gym-nasium, and we conducted practical disaster prevention training for two days before going to the disaster-struck area. In the training, the students used iPads that were rented free of charge. Many organizations participated in the training, including the Scientific Society of Japan Mountain-climbing and big data researchers of University of Tokyo Graduate School and other institutions.
The reason why we focus on junior high school students is because it was Urayasu ju-nior high school students who actually worked hard when the earthquake struck. They were not on the side of those being helped, but rather on the side of those giving help. For example, they helped supply the elderly with water and participated in other volunteer ac-tivities.
While the training program was only for three days, my eyes were opened to the unlim-ited potential of children, as I saw firsthand how the children grew with each day.
Furthermore, on August 22, right before the new semester started, we opened Urayasu Children’s University again this year with the cooperation of Ryotokuji University, Meikai University, and Juntendo University Faculty of Health Care and Nursing. 60 elementary school students are studying “Amazing Things around Us” until its closing ceremony in De-cember.
In addition, as a commemorative event of the joint agreement that was signed with Chiba Institute of Technology this past May, on August 23, a lecture by General Manager Takayuki Furuta of the University’s Future Robotics Technology Center, who is the leader of the world of robots, and a hands-on experience class were held. Although there was an open call for 100 participants, over 350 parents and children applied, and I was amazed by the high interest in the science of robotics. When I saw the twinkling eyes of the children when they saw the same type of robot which was used at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and when they were actually allowed to maneuver it, it made me strongly feel that “an investment in children is an investment for the future!”
