平城京と平城宮
平城京(710‑784)は 、現在 の奈良市 と大和郡 山市 にまたが る古代 の首都 です。
唐(中国)の 長安城 を手本 に、大小 の道路 で碁盤 目状 に区画 しました。
平城宮 は都 の中央北端 にあ りま した。
羅城 門か ら約75メー トル幅の朱雀大路が通 じ、
そ こには柳や椀(えん じゅ)を植 えて街路樹 としてい ま した。
人口は10万 人 ほ どと考 え られてお り、
約6,500人 が平城宮 につ とめた官人で した。
当時の 日本 の総 人口が推 定600万 人。現在 の20分 の

すか ら、平城京 は巨大都市だった といえるで しょう。奈 良時代 の歴 史 を知 る上 で、 この平城京 の調査 は欠かす ことがで きませ ん。

The investigation of the Nara capital site is indispensable for kno、ving the history ofthe Nara period as a whole

23日 に完成式典 を迎 えた。発掘調査の成果 をふ まえると、 この大極殿 は藤原 宮の大極殿 を移築 した ものであ り、平城京遷都時 点にはまだつ くられてな く、遷都御5年を経過 し た和銅8年
(715)に
至 り完成 した と考 え られるようになっている。移築 とはいえ、屋根瓦や飾 り 金具は最新の意匠のものに新調 され、 とくに瓦は 唐長安城の宮殿に用いられた瓦に似せてことさら に黒 く仕上げられた。なお上層中央の扁額の文字 は作成年代の近い「長屋王願経」
(712)から集 字 した。
