退任記念の特別増刊号の発刊にあたって

イチ 1979 年 3 月母校の熊本大学医学部を卒業後，そのまま当時の解剖学第二講座・恩師小谷正彦教授の下に助手として就 職して以来 40 年，そして 2001 年の 5 月 1 日付けで東京女子医科大学解剖学・発生生物学講座の主任教授に着任してか ら 18 年が過ぎた．2011 年 3 月に教授就任 10 周年を記念して，私の尊敬する先生方や教室員で自分の最も気に入った写 真とともに，それまでの思いを 10 周年記念誌に綴ってもらった．この 3 月でその任を終えるに当たって，その 18 年間 を振り返るために，かつての仲間や教室の有志達と共に退任を記念して自分たちの仕事の総説集を残すという目標を立 てた．今回はそれらを論文としてまとめ，この東京女子医科大学雑誌に退任記念特別号として発刊することにした． そこでまず，私自身が思い描いた仕事は，恩師小谷正彦先生（熊本大学名誉教授）のリンパ学に対する思いを引き継 ぎたいという 18 年前からの初心とその成果を何らかの形で残すことであった．折しも，在任最後の海外での学会とし て，米国・サンディエゴでの Experimental Biology 2018 に出席した帰りに，以前留学していたサンフランシスコの UCSF の旧友 Peter Baluk 博士を訪問した時であった．Peter から小谷先生の総説「リンパ管の 7 不思議」1）を是非英語で読みたいので，世界中のリンパ学者に読んでもらえるよう英訳しないか？としつこく提案されたことで，私の決心が 付いた．実は，小谷先生を真似る形で，私も「リンパ学に残された謎をめぐって」2）と題した総説を発表していた．そこ で，厚かましくも小谷先生にお願いして 2 つの論文を合体して，二人の名前で新たに英文の総説を書かせて頂くお許し を得るために京都の自宅まで伺った．はじめは，データも古いし今時の若い人達の役に立つだろうかと心配して，私の 我が儘な願いを固辞されたものの，私の引退の花道の 1 つとするためにどうしても必要であることを分かって頂き，つ いに「リンパ・リンパ管・リンパ組織の謎」3）を完成することができた．オリジナルの論文を私の方で勝手に修正させて 頂き，外国の研究者でも引用文献が入手できるものに換えたり，できるだけ邦文のものよりドイツ語も含めた欧文の論 文を引用した．当初の予定よりはるかに長文の総説となったが，現在もなお素朴な疑問として残る様々な“不思議”や “驚き”について，現代の若い研究者にとって少しでも意外なヒントや解決の糸口が見つかることを心から願ってやま ない． この増刊号には，さらに自分だけでなく教室と関係のあった何人かの有志にも寄稿をお願いした結果，立派 な原稿が寄せられた．この企画に賛同し寄稿して頂いた方々には心より感謝の意を表したい．幸いなことに， この特別増刊号は英語でオンライン化されることになっている．願わくば，この増刊号が少しでも多くの世界 中の研究仲間達の目に触れて欲しい．何らかのお役に立てるならば，これまでの 40 年間の研究人生の中でも最 も大きな喜びとなろう． 2019 年（平成 31 年）3 月吉日 1）小谷正彦：リンパ管の 7 不思議．リンパ学 35：66―80, 2012 2） 江崎太一：リンパ管形成とリンパの流れ リンパ学に残された謎をめぐって リンパと脂肪との関わり．リンパ学 37：4―9, 2014

On the Publication of This Commemorative Edition

After graduating from my alma mater, Kumamoto University, School of Medicine, forty years ago in March 1979, I got a job straight away as an assistant Professor to my former teacher, Prof. Masahiko Kotani, who was in charge of 2nd Department of Anatomy at that time. On May 1st, 2001, I took up a new post as Chairman in the Department of
Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Tokyo Women’s Medical University. Eighteen years have passed since then. In March 2011, we published a memorial essay album to celebrate our ten-year anniversary together with all members of our department, along with our research records and favorite photographs. To reflect on those eighteen years as I retire this March, I have set a goal to leave behind a collection of reviews for our works to commemorate this turning point with my former colleagues and volunteers of my department. This time, I have decided to arrange them to publish as a special issue of the Journal of Tokyo Women’s Medical University in commemoration of my retirement. Originally, I thought that I would leave some kind of record of my original intention from eighteen years ago to take after Prof. Kotani’s wish in lymphology, and achievements. This was on the way back from my last overseas confer-ence as department chair, Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego, as I went to pay a visit to my old friend and col-league, Dr. Peter Baluk in UCSF, San Francisco. He would very much like to read Prof. Kotani’s review paper “Seven Mysteries of the Lymphatics”1 in English and persistently suggested me to translate it for lymphologists all over the
world to read. That is what I set my mind to. Actually, I had also published a review article entitled “Some Remaining Mysteries in Lymphology: Relationships between Lymph and Fat”2 modeled after Prof. Kotani’s, so I went all the way
to Prof. Kotani’s home in Kyoto to shamelessly ask his permission to combine the two papers and co-author a new review article in English. He flatly refused my selfish request at first, out of concern that the data were old, and the information would not be useful to young scientists nowadays. Fortunately, I managed to convince him that this was necessary for my rite of passage into retirement, and this is where “Mysteries in Lymph, Lymphatics, and Lymphoid Tissues”3 originated. I went ahead and revised the original papers, substituting cited works to those researchers from
other countries would also be able to obtain, and citing German and other Western-language papers rather than Japa-nese ones wherever possible. Though the resulting review paper ended up becoming far longer than originally planned, I sincerely hope that it may guide young researchers today toward some unexpected hints or clues on the

various “mysteries” or “wonders” that remain unexplained still today.
This special issue does not consist only of my work; I also asked several volunteers who had some interaction with my department to contribute, whereupon excellent manuscripts were submitted. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of those who contributed in support of this project. Fortunately, this special issue will be made avail-able online in English. It is my sincere hope that this special issue catches the attention of as many research colleagues as it can worldwide. If you find it useful in some way, that would be my greatest joy in these forty years of life as a researcher.
