脳は複雑です．まず，全体が不思議な見かけをしています．そして，脳はからだのいろいろ な部分と，神経で結びついています．脳の内部にはたくさんの異なる場所があり，そのあいだ にもさまざまな神経の連絡があります．また，脳のなかには，自分のからだ自体がいくつも再 現されています．さらに，外の世界，たとえば目で見える世界や耳で聞こえる世界も，何重に も再現されています．したがって，肝臓や筋肉などとはレベルの異なる複雑さが，脳にはあり ます．初心者や学生にとって，脳を理解することは大変でしょうが，反面，勉強のしがいもあ ることでしょう． 脳研究の現場では，脳のなかの場所の名前を知るために，アトラスとよばれる脳の地図帳が 欠かせません．本書の原著者は，ラットのアトラスなど，多数のよく使われているアトラスを 出版していることで有名な研究者たちです．脳のなかのありとあらゆる場所についてとても詳 神経解剖学 脳を中心とする神経系につい ての解剖学のことです．解剖 学は生き物の「かたち」につい て考える学術領域です． 神経科学 脳や脊髄をはじめとする神経 系について研究する科学の一 分野のことです．解剖学，生 理学，薬理学，分子生物学な ど，いろいろなテクニックを 使って研究します． しく知っている神経解剖学の専門家による，神経科学の入門書がこの本なのです．コンパクト にまとめられていて，美しくわかりやすい図がたくさんのせられています．複雑な脳につい て，これほどやさしくていねいに解説している教科書は，なかなかありません．わかりやすい うえに，最新のデータや過去の経緯について書かれていたりもします．大学に入学し脳につい て初めて勉強する学生に最適な教科書であると思い，本書の日本語訳をはじめました． 原著内での疑問点については，Charles Watson教授に直接に答えていただくことができま した．さらに，原著の誤りは，原著者の了解を得てできる限り修正してあります．また，内容 について，東京医科歯科大学の中村泰尚名誉教授から，多くの貴重なご意見をいただきました． ここに記して感謝いたします． また，本書の出版にあたっては，グラベルロードの伊藤裕之さんと共立出版の信沢孝一さん にたいへんお世話になりました．ありがとうございました． 2012年3月 徳野博信 iii日本語版の読者へ
Introduction to the Japanese edition of “The Brain”
We have been very lucky to have “The Brain” translated into Japanese by our colleague Dr Hironobu Tokuno of Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science. Dr Tokuno is an outstanding neuroscientist who has not only translated the book, but has also contributed both ideas and illustrations to the book. He also corrected a number of my errors that were present in the English edition.
Over the past two years, I have led neuroanatomy workshops in Tokyo, and the stu-dents performed very well, despite the fact that the workshops were given in English. I hope that the Japanese translation will make it easier for students to learn the basics of brain anatomy.
This book differs from many other introductory neuroanatomy texts, in that it begins by presenting basic brain anatomy as seen in the rodent brain. Most texts start by teaching about the human brain, but in my experience the complexity of the human brain makes it a difficult model to study. We therefore reserve the study of human cerebral cortex for the second half of this text.
