I はじめに現代英語においてきわめて頻繁に出現する. h a v eab a t h 、t a k ea d v a n t a g eo fといった. 動調+名詞+(前置詞)の構造は、 T heOxfordE n g l i s hD i c t i o nαr yでの初出例の調査によれば、 1 5 0 0 年以前に形成されたものはごくわずかで 1 5 0 0年以降急速に増加していく。(1). 5 0 0年直前の 1 5世紀後半に英国最初の印刷家として活躍した本稿の目的は、急激に増大する 1 ウィリアム・キャクストンの英語を調査することによって、 1 5世紀後半の動詞+名詞+(前置詞)構造の発達状況ばかりか、ウィリアム・キャクストン自身の英語の特徴を明らかにす. 0冊以上の仏語、ラテン語、オランダ語の作品を英語に翻ることにある。キャクストンは、 2 訳して出版した。彼が出版したものはチョーサーやマロリーの文学作品をはじめさまざまな. 0 0冊を越える。彼の出版物がその後の英語の発達に大きな影響ジャンルにおよびその数は 1 を与えたことは言うまでもなし、。初期の印刷家たちの中でキャクストンのユニークな点は、彼は自分の出版した作品に自分自身で書いたプロローグやエピローグを付けたということである。彼はそれらの中で、出版の目的ばかりか当時の社会的背景や受容について言及しており、彼の英文は言語学ばかりか書誌学の面からも貴重な資料となり得るものである O このようなキャクストン自身が書いた英文を集めた. N .F .B l a k e編 C αx t o n ' sOwnP r o s e ( 2 )と. それを基に筆者が編纂した A C oncord αn c et oC αx t o n ' s0 ωnProse(3) 並びに彼の晩年. neydos ( 14 9 0 )(4) の2 ， 0 0 0行文を調査材料として動詞十名詞の仏語からの翻訳作品である E +(前置詞)構造の出現状況を調査した。この構造は. d o， g i v e，h a v e，make，t a k eの 5つ. の基本動詞に多く見られるので、今回はこれらの動詞に限って用例を収集することにした。用例の収集にあたっては、. makeabookなどのように文字通りの意味で用いられているも. のは選ばなかったが、動調+名詞+ (前置詞)構造が受動態や関係代名詞によって修飾された名詞句として現れた場合はデータの中に入れた。.
