“KYOTOGRAPHIE: Kyoto International
Photography Festival 2016” is held in Kyoto City
from April 23 to May 22. The theme for the fourth
edition of this international photography festival
is “Circle of Life.” The festival features 15 venues
unique to Kyoto including temples and
warehous-es. The past three festivals have been well received
attracting approximately 157,000 visitors.

eing one of Japan’s most well recognized
foods, sushi is popular among foreigners
vis-iting the country. Though originally it was
something that had to be made by hand, recently in
many conveyor belt sushi bars, it is made by robots.
Specialists in making machinery for food production,
Suzumo Machinery Co., Ltd. in Nerima City, Tokyo
was the first company in the world to develop this
kind of robot. Their robots are not only sold in Japan;
the overseas market accounts for 25% of sales.

Suzumo Machinery was founded in 1955 and
start-ed out manufacturing a machine that insertstart-ed a bean
jam filling into a monaka (wafer cake). However,
since 1975, the company devoted itself to the
pro-duction of rice cooking machines. This is because
the government decided to reduce rice production.
The company’s founder, SUZUKI Kisaku, took issue
with this and believed that it would be a good thing to
increase rice consumption. So, he began to develop a
sushi making robot that would of course need to use
rice.

Before this machine appeared on the scene, sushi
was a meal that was only eaten on special occasions.
Suzuki thought he would like to transform it into
something that could casually be eaten anytime. The
biggest difficulty was to prevent the grains from
stick-ing together when makstick-ing sushi rice balls. The
solu-tion was not to press them together but to insert air
between the grains.
