An Application of Equity Theory to Interpersonal Relations: APreliminary Study

This study was designed to test the applicability of equity theory to interpersonal relations. Eighty−two female undergraduates were asked to assess equity/inequity alld emotional qualities of the relatiollships with their best same−sex and opposite−sex friellds. They also assessed various aspects of their exchanges as inputs or outcomes.
The results were as follows:
1) Consistent with equity theory, perceptions of equity/inequity were related to emotional qualities.
2) Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that assessments of each other,s input and outcome as a whole were determined by different aspects of their exchanges.
