(200) GEMS . ῌ῎῍. This paper introduces GEMS, educational materials for math and science developed at Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley. First, we review the theoretical background of GEMS. Next, we introduce a lesson using the GEMS unit on liquid in an informal educational setting. Then we discuss ways of disseminating GEMS in Japan and the US. The following characteristics are noted ; ῏ GEMS is a resource to involve students in learning scientific concepts and processes through inquiry, ῐ The series of teacher’s guides are intended to be easy to use for anyone who wants to communicate about science, and ῑ the GEMS project is a model to link the content of science museums with classroom teaching. The GEMS materials can be effective resources for encouraging science communication and also for training teachers as science communicators in Japan.
