Happy New Year!

I hope the new year will be a joyful and

meaning-ful year for all.

For about nine months in the year 2020, we

have not been able to gather in the temple. The last

in-person service was on March 8th. After the

service, we had a luncheon

to thank Tetsuo Unno

Sensei’s long time

Dharma guidance

at Senshin. We have

not gathered on Sun-

days since then.

Hopefully, in

2021, we will

be able to

gather again

to talk together,

eat together and

work together. 2021

will be a milestone for

70TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF SENSHIN.

JAPANESE DHARMA MESSAGE: JANUARY 2021

DHARMA MESSAGE: JANUARY 2021 3

established the Senshin Gakuin Jap-anese School and Dharma School at 1239 W. 36th Place, near the current location. One may notice there is a plate on the wall next to the current Temple Mon (gate). On it is engraved “Senshin Buddhist Church 1937.” The year 1937 is not the year of our temple’s founding. It is the year our pioneers moved and constructed a new Senshin

building on 1336 W. 36th Place, which is currently our Social Hall.

We have been here for 83 years to share the Nembutsu teaching and nurture our Sanghaship. Next year will be our 70th anniversary as an inde-pendent temple. But from a Buddhist point of view, there is no “indepen-dent.” Everything is dependent on another, so we should say in our mind, “Independent (but dependent) temple.”

There are many to thank for this 70th Anniversary opportunity. Thanks to Amida Buddha, Shakyamuni Bud-dha, Shinran Shonin, and Pure Land Masters, we can learn the Nembutsu teaching and gather at the temple. Thanks to Los Angeles Betsuin, we es-tablished Senshin Gakuin and Dharma

School. Thanks to the former Senseis, the Issei and Nisei pioneer members, we have a Hondo and other build-ings where we can hear the Dharma. Thanks to the support of Sansei and Yonsei, the descendants of our pioneer members, and other new members, we are able to maintain a stable and lively temple. And thanks to our neighbors, friends, and other temples

in Southern California and the BCA, we are able to interact with Jr. YBA, Fujinkai, YABA, Taiko, Gagaku, etc, all to maintain our temple culture. The hardcore Buddhist may even thank the WW2 experience as they found some-thing good came from that difficult situation. Those experiences created our temple and Sangha.

We have been depending on others to become an independent temple, and, even after we became an independent temple, we continue to depend on oth-ers for help and support. We also sup-port and help others and others depend on us; but, as Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, we should not talk about that aspect very much since it often creates Continuted on page 4

Senshin. We will welcome the 70th anniversary year. In May

1951, we became independent of Los Angeles Betsuin.

Prior to 1951, we were a part of the Los Angeles Betsuin.

If we include the very beginning of the temple founding, it will

be 83 years. In 1928, Rev. Junin Ono of Los Angeles Betsuin

Senshin-ji

Senshin is a Jodoshinshu

Hongwanji-ha Mahayana

Buddhist Temple. That is

to say, it is one of the ten

branches of the True Pure

Land Sect of Mahayana

Japanese Buddhism.

Jo-doshinshu has a history

in the United States of

approximately 130 years,

representing one of the first distinctly different religious traditions from the western religions of Judaism, Chris-tianity and Islam. And, in spite of enormous pressure to become more Christian in views and values, it has maintained its fundamental differenc-es beyond the three generations of ethnic religious institutions in Amer-ica. Like most religions, Buddhism has flourished in times of persecution, and this is true of Jodoshinshu in America. With the complete rejection of Japanese-Americans during WWII as legitimate Americans, post-war Jodoshinshu flourished with new temples and temple sanghas reaching a peak of some 75 temples by the 1970s. Imprisonment in concentration camps during WWII, however, planted the seed in us that sprouted in an increas-ingly obsessive need to be accepted by the majority society and on its terms rather than ours. Where such concerns were paramount, membership began to decline. Still, many of our temples Continuted on page 4

Continuted on page 7

boastfulness and ego expansion. We should instead emphasize the help that others and thank them.

Therefore, for our 70th anniversary year, let’s thank others, and let’s use the word, “Okagesama.” “Okagesama de, we can welcome the 70th anni-versary.” Okagesama literally means “Mr or Ms. Shadow.” O is an honor-ific prefix and kage means Shadow or dark part, which signifies what we are not able to see or notice. Sama is an honorific suffix. “Thanks to your support and many others’ support that we notice and not notice, we welcome the 70th anniversary.”

Jodo Shinshu is the teaching of “Thank others.” Starting with Amida Buddha, we thank family members, ancestors, friends, teachers, co-work-ers, neighbors, enemies, other beings, nature, and all others. Hopefully, we can gather at the temple sometime in 2021 to celebrate our 70th anniversary and to thank each other.

*Regarding the Buddhist era, abbre-viated “B.E.”, there are several ways of counting. A popular one is from the Theravada Buddhists. They count the beginning of the B.E from the year Shakyamuni Buddha entered perfect Nirvana (passed away) but depend on the countries, the interpretations of the first year is different. According to them, the Buddha passed away in B.C. 544. Thus by adding 544 to the Com-mon Era, we will arrive at the Bud-dhist era (544 + 2021 = 2565.) This calculation is used by Sri Lanka or Myanmar. Other Theravada countries, such as Thai or Laos add 543 to the Common Era. They start counting B.E. 1 year, next year from Shakyamuni Buddha’s passing. (543 + 2021=2564.) However, some traditions or scholars have their own interpretation and they say the Buddha passed away in the year B.C. 486 or 383, etc.

flourish as Buddhist institutions, re-gardless of whether their numbers fall in number, maintaining, or increasing.

Buddhism in general sees the universe as a single interdependent whole with no part of it able to exist as a separate entity. Interdependence is therefore a fact and not a choice or just one of many options. American “rugged individualism” then is seen as a self-and-other destructive attitude of the ego-self. The ego-self imagines itself to be the only reality there is,

and thinks, speaks, and acts to defend and promote itself by controlling and achieving what it desires. At such times, happiness means getting what you want, and unhappiness not getting what you want, whether it is things, wealth, power, influence, fame, etc. The ego-self then is the problem. It creates its own reality, a reality Bud-dhism calls delusion. And the attach-ment to that delusion is the cause of all human suffering.

Shinran Shonin, our founder, asked a question that was never asked before: “How can you pick yourself up by your bootstraps if you are wearing your boots?” How is it possible for the ego-self to become egoless? And is it possi-ble to avoid arrogance and pride in the intellectual knowledge and meditative abilities you acquire? The self cannot see itself, no matter how intelligent and disciplined it becomes. Shinran Shonin makes the astounding statement that we must give up completely and abso-lutely any attempt to grasp Awakening

(Enlightenment) for ourselves. And in the moment that we do give up, we wake up to reality. And this occurs in spite of us, not because of us.

A Buddhist temple, therefore, is a place where these ideas and resultant attitudes are kicked around in ways that show us the fact of our ego-self. The practice is in ritual, sermons, discussion, socializing as a group, fes-tivals, cultural arts, allowing our egos to clash and be set aside. It, therefore, cannot be run as a business or in an ef-ficient manner, because there is no end

product to buy, only an ongoing becoming. Those Sanghas who have been faithful to this idea are still here, well beyond three generations. They are always changing in approach as the need and occasion arises; without hullabaloo, notoriety, set leader-ship and set people being in charge; without limiting clear-cut creeds, statements of pur-pose, endless guidelines and by-laws, etc. etc. ad nauseum. The system is about people helping each other to see and share their own foibles, to see our own fakery and mock-heroic postur-ing – and in dopostur-ing so, see the reality of the Pure Land for the first time and not needing to figure it out. And in that moment, death too is o.k., because life is suddenly here. The temples that are still here are here because of their own history. The prevalent American ideas of profit, business, efficiency, success, and even meaning are largely DNA (Do Not Apply) for Buddhists. The ego-self is a fake; at best, a can’t be helped identity, at worst, the cause of all suffering, individual and group.

The ego-self and reality are One, and yet could not be further apart, as is Namo and Amidabutsu.

Shusho-ye/

Gantan-ye

January 1, 2021, 10a

Shusho-ye, or Gantan-ye, simply means “Service for the New Year.” The literal translation of Shusho-ye is “a gathering for a revision, modification or correc-tion.” New Year Day is an opportunity for us to begin the new year with re-freshing hearts and minds. Our On-line New Year Service will begin at 10a on

January 1st. This year, unfortunately,

we are not able to serve ozoni and sake in the Social Hall, but we are planning to broadcast the Taiko and Shishimai performances from the courtyard.

Hoonko Seminar, Saturday, January 16, 10:30a

Hoonko Service Sunday, January 17, 10a

Hoonko is the most important service for Jodo Shinshu Buddhists. It is a memorial service for Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Shinran Shonin passed away on January 16, 1263 (November 28 in the lunar calendar) at the age of 90. Kakunyo Shonin, the great-grandson of Shinran Shonin started “Hoon ko” when he observed Shinran Shonin’s 33rd memorial service. “Hoon” means to pay the debt of gratitude, and “ko” means gathering. Hence, “Hoonko” denotes “the gathering to recompense Shinran Shonin for his teaching.” There are several ways to thank Shinran Shonin: By listening to the teaching, chanting Shoshinge (that was written by Shinran Shonin,) reciting the Nembutsu, etc. In some areas of Japan, the follow-ers invite their minister to their homes to hold the Hoonko service and listen to the teaching of Shinran Shonin with their family members.

Hoonko Study Classes

This year, the Hoonko study classes will be online, every day from Monday, January 11 to Thursday

Dana: Donating to

Senshin Buddhist

Temple

We want to thank you for your Dana, which goes without needing to be said, it is gen-erous and much appreciated. But, we will say it anyway: Thank you for your Dana. To make sure your support is properly reflect-ed, here are some suggestions.

Clarity: Your intended reason for the

do-nation, if any, is important to the Board and the Sangha. Please clearly state your intent, either on the memo on the check, a note, or on the envelope.

Convenience: Before COVID, many of the

Sangha would deliver your Dana to the Temple. Oseibo was in the Oseibo envelope, Ohigan in that envelope, etc. Today, most Sangha members place multiple checks into one envelope. We understand and that is fine with us. We do ask that if there is a time sensitive matter (ABA chashu bao sale, Obon raffle tickets, etc), please so note on the envelope so we know to give your matter priority.

Online Dana: Having entered the 21st

Century, Senshin can now accept your Dana online. If you go to our website, senshin-temple.org, and scroll or go to the bottom of our page, there is this leeetle orange ovoidDonate link. Under the orange Donate link, are eye straining credit card icons. You can donate either by credit card or Paypal. After you enter the amount of the Dana, the next page has a recap of your donation and a space “Add special instructions to the Seller.” In that space you can type your designations, Ohigan, Shotsuki Hoyo for Ronald X., etc.

We hope this makes it easier for you to donate to our Senshin Buddhist Temple. If it seems too complicated, that is okay. Just do what you always do, and we will figure it out. Thank you again.

Dana,

金 額を記載して、次のページの“Add sp-cial instructions to the Seller” 欄に‘Ohigan’とか‘Shotuki Hoyo for 誰それのため’etc.

Vehicle Donation

This is a reminder that Senshin will take any vehicle (car, pickup, truck, motorcycle, and even boat) as a dona-tion to the temple. Donors can report the full amount of funds received from the vehicle donation as a deduction on their tax returns.

We work with Harold’s Car Do-nation Service (HCDS) to have

vehicles picked up, pro-cessed and refurbished

as necessary to bring in the

highest sale amount for the donated vehicle.

Once the proceeds from the vehicle donation are received by Sen-shin, a letter is sent to the donor to ac-knowledge the vehicle donation. The letter includes details of the donated vehicle and the amount for which the vehicle was sold or salvaged. All donors will be acknowledged in the Prajna.

If you have any questions about the program, or wish to donate a vehicle, please contact either Jean Minami

(323) 938-0048, or Wilbur Takashi-ma (310) 398-9558.

the year. However, regardless of the cancellation of most of our regular activities, we were still able to stay connected. BWA is a sisterhood of women interested in supporting the temple and each other in the spirit of mutual friendship and cooperation. That sentiment really became appar-ent as we navigated our way through COvID-19. In the year of a pandemic, it wasn’t about cooking or any other kind of work whatsoever. It was all about a multi-generational group of women feeling embraced by each other’s compassion and support even though we were physically apart--all of us interconnected. We welcome you to be a part of that embrace. It really feels so good. Please contact JoAnn Komai at [email protected] or Sandra Aguilar at sandrajoylee@ gmail.com if you’re interested in join-ing us. We’d love to have you!

Our next meeting will be on Janu-ary 10 at 8:15 am via Zoom.

With gratitude, we acknowledge the following for their generous Dana: Ted Akahori and Julie Akahori Eshinni

Big thanks to Marilyn Miyamoto for continuing as our leader for another year! Religious chair, John Hiramoto, and Treasurer, Cathy Iyemura, fill the other official positions while others will head our various projects. While we cannot yet meet in person, we had many Senshin friends join our Zoom Bingo event in December. Lots of fun -- and prizes, too.

Happy New Year!!!! We hope 2021 will be a little better than last year.

Sadly, mochitsuki was cancelled, but the Jrs. made a music video for it instead! We hope you enjoyed it!

Zoom meetings are still ongoing for all of us, and the Jrs have been using Zoom to plan out the “Southern Dis-trict Jr. YBL Seminar 1”. We will be co-hosting the Seminar with West LA

and venice, which will be conducted on Sat. Jan 23, 2021. The Jrs are going over the theme “vir-tual reality”, includ-ing topics like virtual fatigue via Zoom. If you are a high school student interested in learning more about Jr. YBA, feel free to contact parent advi-sor, Joyce Yamashita, at kyokosam@aol. com.

Board News

Happy New Year!

Wow! 2020 was Samsara on steroids. Thank you to Chikako Kojima for

serving as Board President for the last two-and-a-half years and for the

many special things she did for us. And thank you to the folks who served

on the Board in 2020 and the many people who volunteered their time

and energy to keep Senshin special.

2021 starts with optimism that there appears to be a light at the end of

the tunnel for reopening. Thinking about the bright side of being closed, I

have even more appreciation for Senshin, our Sangha, and the things we

do that make us uniquely Senshin. We turned to Zoom and now some of

our elderly and distant Sangha members can join our Sunday services.

We’re staying connected. Your generosity and support has kept us stable.

Other temple organizations found clever ways to share the Dharma and

their experiences with the greater community.

Somewhere in there is the making of a great year. Either virtually or at

Senshin, I look forward to sharing this path with you.

The 2021 Senshin Nembutsu Retreat has been cancelled due to the ongoing COvID-19 pandemic. We hope and expect to be able to resume our annual retreat in February 2022.

Please contact Neil Komai, [email protected] if you would like to attend the Zoom seminar. You will be sent a link approximately one week prior to the seminar..

We’re always looking for new members, but especially at the begin-ning of the year. Often times when ap-proaching prospective members, we’re met with replies of “I’m too young for the Fujinkai. It’s for my mother’s generation.” “There’s too much cook-ing!” I get it! I said the same thing, but eventually joined when I was in my 40’s. Let’s face it, for some reason, all BWA’s don’t seem to have a very positive reputation. Well, it’s time that we dispel all the myths and talk about what BWA is really all about.

In 2020 we weren’t able to gather at the temple for the greater part of

purchase of a Prius V, plug in hybrid. it has great gas mileage and

commut-ing EV (electric) capabilities. if you can, we ask that you consider a donation

towards Sensei’s replacement car. Please send your donation to the Temple,

designating the donation as “Prius” or “car.”
