The Effects of Colors

Some scientists say colors can ( 1 ) our actions and feelings. One experiment was done by a university teacher at a school in Canada. The walls of a classroom were orange, white and brown. He changed the colors to yellow and blue. Students were tested for intelligence before and after the wall colors were changed. Some students had higher test scores after the walls were painted. Attendance was also better after the change in colors. And teachers reported that students were less ( 2 ) to cause trouble.

In 1979, an American scientist called Schauss, tested the effects of colors on people. He discovered that the color pink made people relax. He tested this discovery at an American prison. He found that pink rooms made the prisoners ( 3 ) more calm and peaceful.

Researchers aren’t sure how or why colors affect people. Some people believe that cells at the back of the eye send signals to the brain when they see certain colors. Experiments show, ( 4 ), that when people look at warm colors – red, orange, yellow – brain activity and blood pressure increase. Breathing also becomes faster. But the color blue has the opposite effect.

Not all scientists agree that color really does influence people in an important way. However, some experts continue to use color as a way to influence people. A dentist’s office may be painted blue to ( 5 ) the fears of patients. And the color orange is often seen in places where people can buy and eat foods quickly, because that color seems to make people feel hungry.

ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS

Travel guides used to describe the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a group of beautiful, small islands surrounded by charming beaches with a roaring sea all around. This image, however, was destroyed as a result of the ‘killer tsunami’ just over 11 years ago.

On December 26, 2004, the world’s most powerful earthquake for more than 40 years struck just off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. Andaman and Nicobar was one of the places that suffered the most from the tsunami that followed. There was so much damage and so many people killed in countries all around the Indian Ocean, even as far as thousands of kilometers away in Africa. However, Andaman and Nicobar was one of the most difficult to send help to. It is a long way from the nearest mainland and India, from where it is governed, is even further away. Many of the ports and airports which were used to connect the islands were destroyed and only helicopters could be used.

It used to be a group of about 400 islands – 38 of them inhabited. The population was about 370,000 with about 100,000 in the capital Port Blair. However, many thousands of people were killed and even some of the islands themselves seem to have disappeared under the sea. The actual number who died is still not known. One fisherman, rescued from a village on Car Nicobar, said: “There’s not a single hut which is still standing. Everything is gone. Most of the people have gone up to the hills and are afraid to come down.”

The islands are home to a number of tribes such as the Jarawas and Shompens, whose way of life has not changed for hundreds and hundreds of years. To protect them, foreigners are not allowed access to the areas where they live. An Indian helicopter, dropping food and water over remote islands, was attacked by tribesmen using bows and arrows.
