November 28, 2016 Dear Principal,
2017 International Educators to Japan Program
The Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) would like to show our appreciation to the educators of the greater Detroit area for taking special care and efforts to educate the children of the Japanese business community in Detroit. Since 1992, the JBSD has sponsored 152 Detroit educators to participate in the International Educators to Japan program. In 2017, we would like to again invite educators from this area to join together with educators from throughout the United States and several other nations and have the opportunity to be introduced to Japanese culture and its education system.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is completely paid for by the JBSD and the approximately twelve-day program will begin in late June and end in early July 2017. We invite you to nominate an educator and/or administrator from your school whom may be interested in participating and benefiting from this international exchange program. We would appreciate it very much if you would complete the attached application along with the nominee’s essay explaining their motivation for participating in the program. The completed paperwork should then be mailed to the following address for arrival no later than January 13, 2017.
In the link below, you can view essays written by the 2016 participants about their experience in the program.

International Educators to Japan Program
1. Program Summary
The International Educator to Japan program has been sending foreign teachers of Japanese expatriate children on trips to Japan every year. The Program started in Los Angeles in 1975 to express appreciation to the teachers for their efforts to help these children, who arrive in the United States with little knowledge of the local language and culture. Through the visits, the program enables the teachers to develop a better understanding of Japan. All expenses are borne by supporting Japanese business associations comprised of Japan corporations operating overseas. Institute for International Studies and Training (IIST) is the coordinating body in Japan.
The program has gained an excellent reputation as a philanthropic activity undertaken by Japanese firms. Over the years, the number of supporting Japanese corporations has increased substantially. Moreover, the program has expanded to ten U.S. cities, as well as Toronto, Canada beginning in 1993 and the United Kingdom from 1994. In the greater Detroit area, this program began in 1992 and has since supported a total of 152 educators from the greater Detroit area visit Japan.
