ジェイムズ自身が否定的であった秘蹟の描き方が，ここではあまりにも神聖 化されて描かれるために，観客たちもその実効性を懐疑的に受けとめていた ことが充分考えられる。王権に対する抵抗の正当性をめぐって議論を交わし た知識階級の観客たちにとっては，この場はあまりにも神聖化された権力の 安易な導入の場に他ならなかったはずである。ジェイムズがその著書の中で 繰り返し述べた王権神授説によって，スコットランドからやってきたこの新 王が，自らの聖性を盾にやがて暴君となるのではないかという不信感と不安 感をイングランドの観客に与えた可能性は拭いきれないのである。王権神授 説と暴君は，まさに表裏一体のものであった。

（“epicures”）のイングランド人とつるんでいろ」（5.3.7-8）と悪態をついてい る。）シェイクスピアは，材源を読み進むなかでスコットランドに対するイン グランドの覇権の陰に潜む，もうひとつの政治的意味を敏感に感じ取ってい たに違いない。劇は，スコットランドを神聖なるイングランドの王権が支配 するかに見えながら，その背後にはイングランドのリアルポリティクスによ る政治支配があることを的確に見ぬいているのである。シェイクスピアは，
むしろスコットランドをイングランド化する過程において，野蛮なものが文 明化するというよりも，封建社会の権力闘争が文化的洗練という名のもとに，
より狡猾で政治性を帯びた近代的リアルポリティクスに変貌してく様に，一 層の興味を持ったに違いない。その事実こそ，シェイクスピアがホリン シェッドの年代記の行間から読み取り，彼の創作意欲を大いにかきたてた部 分であったと思われるのである。
