In the past, improving sanitation problem was a significantly important issue in Japan, especially in the aftermath of World War II. JESC encouraged the national movement for “The life without mosquito and flies” and also has implemented human resource development and researches for effective pest control. Based on those past experiences, Environmental Biology Department has supported the pest control management for developing countries including Central and South America.

W hat is JESC ?

JESC is always keen to broaden our activities for creating a sustainable society, supporting the activities of Ministry of the Environment such as advocating 3R Initiative in Asia and other areas.
Additionaly we are expanding our activities to the field of proper waste water management in developing countries in order to reach the target of Sustainable Development Goals by UN.
JESC has held “The 3R Conference for Asian Local Governments” since 2008 for information exchange and discussion among over 43 local governments taking in charge of waste management in order to solve waste problems.
Build a network of waste management in Asia Information sharing
JESC News has been published since 2005 for information sharing among ex-JICA trainees and participants of international conferences organized by JESC etc. They can obtain JESC's activity, especially international cooperation activity in waste management and 3R field.
Research for water environment
Japan Sanitation Consortium 2nd Office (JSC) has tackled sanitation problems such as treatment of household waste water and night soil in developing countries, consigned by Ministry of the Environment, JICA , Asian Development Bank and so on.

JESC has dispatched experts to developing countries in the fields of solid waste management, environmental science and environmental biology based on the request from developing countries.

Consulting service for hazardous wastes
We have been implementing pre-application consultaion service on hazardous wastes in regard t o t h e r e g u l a t i o n o n t h e C o n t r o l o f Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (Basel Convention), in commission by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Reasearch for air pollution
Asia Center for Air Pollution Research (ACAP) handles scientific and technical matters of the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET), a regional initiative for promoting cooperation in addressing acid deposition issues in East Asia, and is one of the hubs of the research on air pollution in East Asia including acid deposition and oxidant.
