年度 入試問題 一般選抜・スカラシップ型 【英語】

I. 次の英文を読み、それに続く設問に答えなさい。

Life Was Different Back Then

If you lived in ancient Rome, your life would be a lot different from what it is today.

There were no cars or buses, and there certainly weren’t any electronics. In some other ways, life was very similar to the way we do things today.

In ancient Rome, most mornings started off with a small breakfast of just bread and water. Like today, Romans got dressed and ready to go to school or work. They didn’t wear jeans or T-shirts, though. They usually wore long gowns called togas.

School happened in a one-room schoolhouse. Most girls stayed home to help their mothers with housework. Girls from wealthy families had a private teacher or were allowed to attend public school. Children of different ages studied together. Many of the same subjects we still learn today were taught in ancient Rome. They learned math, writing, history, and philosophy. Unlike today when everyone can go to school, poor children had to stay home.

Only the men of ancient Rome worked. Like today, they might be farmers, builders, traders, or clothing makers. Others became doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Wealthy people only worked until noon. Poor people had very little free time.

Relaxing and socializing were very important in ancient Rome. After work, men and boys went to public bathhouses. Bathhouses weren’t just for bathing. Often, they had a library, gardens, and a gymnasium. Today, most people take a bath in their own home.

At 3:00 p.m., ancient Romans went home for the biggest meal of the day. For poor people, this was usually very simple. Wealthy Romans might have seven different kinds of food on special occasions.

The evening was a time for fun activities. Like people today, many Romans listened to music, read, or participated in sports. Sometimes they attended fights or races. They usually went to bed early because, unlike today, they didn’t have electricity. Instead, a family shared a single lamp that burned out.
