I. 次の英文を読み、それに続く設問に答えなさい。
The Longest River
The longest river in the world stretches across Africa for 6, 694 kilometers. This river is so long that it flows through nine countries. It is called the Nile River.
It is believed that the Nile is more than 30 million years old. The river has two main branches: the White Nile and the Blue Nile. Most of the water comes from the Blue Nile.
It is shorter than the White Nile but is much more powerful. The rivers flow separately until they meet south of Egypt. Unlike most rivers, the Nile is unique because it flows from south to north instead of north to south.
The Nile has been a source of food, transportation, and trade for the people of Africa since ancient times. Long ago, ancient Egyptians settled along the Nile because of the fertile land it created. They realized that the mud from the Nile River was a great natural resource for their growing crops. Soon they began building cities nearby. They used the papyrus, a kind of tall grass that grows in the river, to make rope, paper, cloth, and baskets. They also let their livestock eat the grass along the river.
The Egyptians watched the river closely, waiting for the floods to come. They built stone pillars called Nilometers and placed them in the river. This allowed them to measure how high the Nile rose. They knew that if it was rising too much, it would destroy their crops. If it didn’t rise high enough, there would be no crops to grow, and people would go hungry.
Floods from the Nile could destroy homes and communities. In ancient times, Egyptians built walls to keep out the floodwaters. By 1970, the Aswan Dam was built to protect people from the dangerous waters. Along with the dam, a lake has been created to help stop the floods. It stores the floodwater and provides Egyptians with enough water to last throughout the year.
Today, the Nile continues to be a life source for many communities in Africa. Tourists who are interested in experiencing the Nile can travel the river by riverboat to witness the grandness and beauty it offers.

You may not be able to see the wind, but you can see the effects of wind on the things around you. You can feel it blowing across your face on a cold day. You can see the leaves blowing down the street. So why does the air move? The simple answer is that the Sun heats Earth unevenly, causing different amounts of air pressure in different areas.
(1) This does not really give you much of an idea about what causes the wind to blow.
You have to look a little deeper. Convection currents are loops of moving air or water that transfer energy from one location to another. (2) convection currents occur in the air, (3) they cause wind. Local winds, like mountain breezes and valley breezes, stay in a fairly small area. Mountains absorb more heat during the day than the valleys do, (4) warm air rises off the mountainside. The cooler air from the valley rushes in to take (5) its place. During the night, the mountains cool faster than the valleys, (6) the whole
process happens in reverse. A cool breeze blows down from the mountains.
