古墳と南島社会

　古墳時代には近畿中央部に生じた政治権力を核として，日本列島の広域に社会的共通圏が形成さ れる。それはまたその外部世界との差異化を生み出し，境界の形成にもつながるものである。古墳 時代の外部世界との接触に関しては朝鮮半島や東北北部地域の研究が早くから進められてきたが，

九州南部古墳時代社会と南島社会との関係は近年ようやく考古資料に基づいた研究が行える段階に なってきたところである。

　従来，種子島以南に古墳が及ばないことは，大隅海峡という海で隔てられることをもって，とく に議論の対象となることはなかったが，遠距離でもなく往来があり，他の時代には境界とはならな いこの海峡が古墳時代に政治的な境界となる理由を地理的要因に求めることはできない。そこで，

本稿では考古資料にもとづいて，この海峡を挟む両者の比較を行い，また両者の関係性について確 認することから，南の境界域の実態を明らかにし，交流しつつも相互影響関係の低い社会を再評価 する。

　本稿ではまず古墳時代並行期の南島を考察する上で最も重要な種子島広田遺跡の年代的位置を確 認し，その上で九州南部古墳社会と併行期の南島社会の共通性，非共通性について整理する。さら に両社会を結んだことを明確に表す考古資料，南島産貝製品について古墳時代研究の立場からその 位置づけについて再検討を行う。これらを通して，最終的には古墳社会と南島社会との関係を民族 形成の観点からの再評価を行おうとするものである。
